I need help please I am freaking out. I have a 10 week old Cane Corso puppy and my husband just got her ears cropped. It's only been 7 hours at this point in time but there's a lot of blood and she doesn't have tape or posts or anything on her ears. She keeps shaking her head. We have a cone around her neck to prevent her from scratching her stitches but I don't know if that is the reason she is bleeding a lot. This is our first time dealing with cropping and I am scared for her please any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Some blood is normal. No tape covering the incisions is a good thing as they heal – they need to be open to the air; however, it's been years and years since I've brought one home right after a crop. I've more often brought them home when the ears were about a week or two post-crop, as the norm for good breeders (at least in Dobermans) is for the breeder to have them cropped instead of leaving it up to the buyer to seek out cropping.

So, is blood seeping or dripping out of the sutures at a rate where you can see it forming?

When she shakes, are her ears slapping the cone? That's not a great thing. I've never used a cone, but again, I usually don't see my pup the day of/after the crop. Dobes, at least, (and I would think Corsi might be tougher and more stoic than Dobes, frankly) usually are back to their normal selves quickly post-crop.

You want to see scabs forming of course, but it's probably too soon for that, and even then the ears look nasty for several days. They always come around, as long as you let them breathe.

It's probably been some hours since you posted this thread. I hope she has been sleeping a good amount. Unless you feel she is losing so much blood as to be a danger, (and I can't really gauge that at all from here) I'd say just try to keep her calm and not overly active for now. Pictures might be helpful.

Contact the person who cropped the ears if you can, and contact the breeder if you can.

Keep us updated, and I wish you peace.

You want to put NEOSPORIN on her ears at least twice a day. It will help her ears heal... if she continues to bleed ( a few drops is very normal) take her to the vet. I hope it was a professional that actually cropped her ears.... the cone is just weird to her so she will continue to shake her head and be annoyed by it.
