We have spent a day or two with a new Presa Canario and he seems to be such a good dog. With that being said, everything you read online is quite concerning regarding their aggressive behaviour, guard dog, etc...

My wife has had plenty of dogs in her lifetime but I have not.

Can someone reassure me that this is a good decision?

Congratulations on your new puppy. Presa Canarios get bad reps same as pit bulls or any other bully breeds. As long as you set rules in place and provide basic training you will be fine. Presas have different personalities depending on parents and the bloodlines. Some may be more human or dog aggressive have a stronger guarding instinct, while other may be more easy going laid back friendly. Time will tell. They are loyal. Treat them well and they will return the favor... good luck

Many of our beautiful breeds have a bad rep , I would say the majority of the aggressive out of control dogs have got an owner that's not bothered looking into the breed hasn't got a clue how to handle a dog and have got them for a status dog.
My eldest cc in the wrong hands is a good example, but with us hes the most loving loyal boy.

A mastiff in general is a large, strong dog. I look at most dogs like a gun. Guns don't kill people..... people do. With the correct training I believe 95%of all dogs can be just what they were trained to be. Yes, you have some idiots with guns/digs that can be a danger. All Mastiffs should be trained and socialized from a very early stage. With training your Pressa will be a Valued member of your family !!

If your wife has experience with dogs, including large guard breeds, then you probably have nothing to worry about. I had a prior experience with an inexperienced ex-wife and a rottweiler puppy, and the two were a complete mis-match. I have no doubt that I could have handled this puppy myself, but the wife was the other side of the equation, and it just didn't work out. Luckily the breeder was willing to take him back and place him in another home. I picked an American Bulldog after that, and he was easy going enough for just about anyone and the best dog I ever had, so it worked out in the end.
