Ears still not standing!

Hey folks. I'm back again looking for advice on Enzo's ears. I have been taping them for the past month with a variety of different posts including tampons, finger splints, taping them back onto his head, and the traditional 5/8 backer rod. Been using Johnson athletic tape. I have been trying to find any information and advice on a 8 month old Cane Corso ears not standing but everything is about young pups. Both ears are literally flopped over like they havent been cropped. Neither of them stand at all. Been trying to get the posts down to the base of the ear canal but it irritates him so much that he shakes his head and ends up getting open sores inside his ears. Am i screwed at this point? I am very upset with my vet because he must of done the crop wrong. I also try to massage them every day but that irritates him too. Any advice on an OLDER dog ear posting or taping that doesnt involve posting to the base of the ear canal would be greatly appreciated. Im putting up pic of the ears and how they are right now.

Sorry to hear your still having troubles. Could you take a pic holding the ear up so can see the ears shape? I would take him to another vet that is known for cropping Cane Corsos and get there opinion on the way the original vet cut the shape of ears.

I would tell you to stop posting them and let them stand on their own. Mine took almost a month before the finally did. I never touched them with anything. I just messaged them at night and sooner or later they just did it on their own. One came up first and then a couple days later the other one.

His ears stood for 30 minutes 2 weeks ago after a 2 day taping. THis is what they looked like. The first one is a pic of the actual cut shape. Only thing i havent tried is moleskin and skin bond because i cant seem to find a glue that i can use that doesnt irritate him.

From looking at first picture it looks like there cut wrong. The bell/bottom is wrong and about half way up is to wide. The cut should be like a smooth circular shape, yours goes out then in then out then in again. Tried to get you pictures of my girls cut but her hair has grown in alot, not that hers is perfect and i asked for a longer cut. Here is link to picture i gave vet to model my girls ears after http://www.apexcanecorso.com/JasmineBOORaritiesWoodston25months1.jpg

Sorta like this but alittle more rounded. Hard to draw on pc. I think they could be fixed but at this point be really hard to find a vet that will help you.

Ears up or not, still a CUTIE PIE! Enzo like Ferrari? Won;t you love him just the same with ears up or down? Find a crop vet, with CORSO experience, and ask if a re-crop can be done? Maybe email photos to vets for an opinion? Contact other breeders in your area and see who they use and what their results are. There is a "stitch" that was developed in Las Vegas for repairing doberman's ears when they failed to stand; perhaps find a dobie vet if there is no corso vet. My neighbor is that vet and is sadly retired, but he feels that it is something most vets with dobie experience should know how to do it. Lots of vets don;t like to do crops because they believe it is cruel, so finding one maybe difficult for a re-crop. Personally I believe it is a matter of taste, and there are way more cruel things being done with dogs than cropping ears! Keep asking until you get the answer you want from a vet you trust!

We have the same problem with out soon to be 9 month old corso. His left ear will flop but the right one stands. We contacted our vet and she said they could always re crop the ear, but at his age I think, will it be worth it? I hope you find something that works. With us posting seems to work for maybe an hour after I take them off then it flops.

Poor guy :( Sorry to hear.

I think (By no means a professional opinion so take my advice lightly) you still may be able to do a re-crop(Although at this age I'm not too sure of how good of an idea is, so def talk to a corso experienced vet that crops or one with a ton of cropping experience regardless of breed and see what they think) but since there is still quite a bit of ear there you may be able to get them down to battle crop that will probably stand up easier since there will then be less ear to stand and you may still have enough area of ear now to get them there.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks for everyones advice and please keep anything else you can think of coming. I am going to wait a couple of days and let those sores heal up completely before i try reposting. My main issue is that i cant seem to keep the posts in long enough, and then when i try reposting, he freaks out and shakes them out. My Vet is an "experienced" cropping vet of many dif breeds already. He is arrogant and when i gave him a picture of what i wanted, he kinda scuffed and then said he knows how to cut them. My buddy had his doberman's ears done by this vet as well so i simply hoped for the best with Enzo being my first cane corso.

this was after a good post for 2 days 2 weeks ago. They were standing because i had just removed the posts before we went out, or he did i should say, and was alert the whole time. Kinda gives me hope.

Given the picture you posted of him in the snow, the right ear appears to have a fold in it? May just be the angle. And what bothers me is he brushed your pic off saying he knows how to do it yet with all the problems you're having getting them to stand, I think I would've told him to take a hike! You & Enzo have to live with his carelessness. Have you thought about contacting your breeder & seeing if they have any suggestions?

I don't own a Cane Corso, but our Dogo's ear had trouble standing until about 5-6 months. The vet had Dogo experience but cut one ear slightly shorter (not noticeable now) than the other. And that was the one that had trouble standing. After constantly taping with tampons, watching videos, reading, I left his ear cause I didn't want to keep irritating it wit the re-taping and I thought it would never stand. And about 2-3 weeks later without taping but massaging the ear each night during this time, it finally stood.

Sometimes before that, I could poke it in and it would stand for a while and then go back down. I was really surprised. They both healed great and now they are standing. I hope you and your boy, who is GORGEOUS by the way, will have success :)

I am going to start massaging the ears with lotion every night now and see if that makes a difference. I shattered my right wrist and arm 5 years ago so its difficult for me to massage them for a long period of time. First time I met a dogo i had no idea what it was. I asked the guy and he told me about them, did some research and thats an awesome dog. I am drawn to no tails on dogs, hence my boxer and what drew me to the cane corsos. Appreciate the gorgeous comment and your boy is the definition of a Dogo Argentino.

There is an implant that can be put in the ears to have them stand. The vet creates a small incision and places the implant along the edge of the ears. Just though I would mention it as another option to re-cropping.

Hate yo bring back such an old thread. It's my first post so. I have a nearly 7 month old Corso Leo. His ears stand on their own and haven't been taped in over a month and a half. They appear they have a slight lean in them. Like they are starting to lean forward not falling back on to the head. If anyone would help me figure on how to post pictures I would be glad to learn. Is it to late to tape at the point and has anyone had success taping at this age. All help appreciated.

Welcome, Sipreb. I use a laptop mostly, so I'm not sure how to post from a phone. It's pretty straight forward from a laptop. Click on the image button above and browse for the pic you want. Hopefully someone else can help if you use a tablet or phone. I'd also suggest starting your own thread. This one is old an your question may not be noticed. If you do start your own post and still can't post the pics, send them to me in a private message and I'll be happy to post them for you.
