Please take a minute to read this article on the need for platelets. Platelets are the band-aids of the body. Without enough platelets the body isn't able to stop bleeding and can be in danger of life threatening internal bleeds, including brain bleeds. People in need of transfusions of platelets for whatever reason may need them daily. Often times they must be genetically matched to the recipient so they aren't rejected. You don't often hear about the shortage of platelets, but I know my hospital has been out more than once with people in desperate need for them.
