Weekend beach trip with the dogs, husband and future spawn

This past weekend we went on a trip to the Oregon Coast. We brought the dogs with us also, of course. The dogs both loved it and experienced neurotic nervousness as well. Diesel would get nervous whenever we were in the car for longer than five minutes. You could practically hear him thinking "Are we going somewhere fun or are we going somewhere bad?" Kahlua was nervous about the actual ocean and also about the waterfall.

So I have a billion pictures so I will post some and then I will comment and post more. There was walking in forests, walking to waterfalls, walking near rivers, walking to the ocean. Oh we also saw a giant herd of elk! I did not get a picture of the elk as we drove by them. It was my first time seeing elk in the wild and I wasn't sure what I was seeing at first. From far off I first said to Sean "Are those cows?" Then as we got closer. "No those aren't cows. Is that a bunch of deer?" And then "No. Those aren't deer. What are those? Are those elk???" Sean says "I think they are reindeer." And then we notice all the road signs that say "Watch for elk" and "Elk crossing" so I guess they were elk after all.

Oh and for those who don't know yet or have forgotten. I'm pregnant. Not fat or drinking too much beer but pregnant. More precisely I am over 22 weeks pregnant and apparently my baby is now the size of a coconut and approximately 11 inches. I feel less bad about my giantness when I take into account how huge the little spawn is getting.

Diesel liked the waterfall. He thought "oh giant drinking fountain. yay!" Kahlua was terrified of the waterfall.

The river, however, was not scary to Kahlua. She really wanted to jump that barrier and go check it out. We did not let her.

Sean forced Kahlua to walk out to the ocean with him and Diesel. She was not pleased about it but Diesel was super excited about the ocean.

And there I am with the dogs and Kahlua is trying to inch her way away from the ocean while Diesel tries go more towards it.

The only picture that Sean and I got together due to the kindness of a passing stranger.

One funny thing about the beach was everytime he came across a rock Diesel would get really excited. Then when Diesel noticed I got excited and picked up a sand dollar whenever I saw one he started hunting for them for me. He would see one and look at me and then pounce on it and start trying to dig it up so he could present it to me.... He had me laughing so hard.

I'm pretty sure I'm laughing at Kahlua trying to escape the ocean in this one.

Poor Kahlua. She just wants to get away from the big scary waterfall.

More wrangling of two dogs each with a different goal.

Whenever we would stop somewhere for a quick picture and not take the dogs with us this is what Kahlua would do. Can you see her disapproving look?

Fantastic pictures, as usual. It looks like you guys had a great time. I'm sorry, but I laughed at you reminding us that you're pregnant and not drinking too much beer. I clearly remember that in between stage where, depending on the clothes I was wearing, you couldn't really tell I was pregnant. Personally, *I* can tell you're expecting.

Thanks everyone! It was a really nice break for us and despite their weird anxieties I think the pups had a great time as well.

OMG I can't tell you how much I love it here. This is what the N. California beaches were once upon a time. You could wander around and expect nobody else to be there and it was glorious. That's what my childhood was like. And I always preferred that to the trips we would take to visit the cousins in southern california where the beaches were always crowded. Ugh crowds. Ugh people. And litter. Yuck.

My husband and I were actually just talking about this and we were saying it almost feels like in a lot of ways Portland is exactly what we grew up in all those years ago and lost due both changing climate with global warming and also everyone moving there for the tech industry rise. I would add to that though that there are features in the pnw that are certainly unique to this area that I adore and would not want to leave ever like more mountains, more trees and the river. OMG the river just endlessly fascinates me.

Anyhow yes we loved those pristine beaches and we loved the drive to get to the beaches and Tilamook forest. And the fact that there are bookstores absolutely everywhere even in a teensy tiny beach town that has very little people and very little stuff. Yay literacy. Yay art. Yay nature. And Yay lack of crowding. I do wish we had managed to get a picture of that herd of elk though. It really shocked both of us. There were so many of them.
