Shedding like crazy...Black hair hair everywhere

My dogs lost their puppy coats around 5-6 months. My guys never had any bald spots from losing their puppy coat. The spots might be nothing at all, but he's at the age where it could be mange. You might want to take him in for a skin scrape for Demodex if you're at all concerned. If you do, make sure that they scrape deep enough to get capillary bleeding. That's really important.

Quick question (sorry, I don‘t mean to take over the threat :)
By when do Mastiffs usually lose their puppy coats? Bane is also shedding like crazy right now, and does even has a couple of minor bald spots. We switched him to Fromm Heartland Gold a while ago, and he doesn‘t get grains at all. I was thinking about other allergies, such as Pollen. I might take him to the vet just to be sure. He is going to be 9 months old this week, so I guess he must have lost his puppy coat already. However, that‘s his first episode of very heavy shedding. I was also thinking about a change to a lighter summer coat, but would there be little bald patches? The hair on his back is still very fluffy, and I can easily pull it out right now.
Tyler we changed Georgias food before Gus came home she developed hot spots from it, I would monitor very close. She ended up getting a topical steroid and antibiotics. Just my experience. Georgia would dig at the spots and caused raw skin. Once we switched back no more issues. I hope this is not the case. It ended up being a yeast infection on he throat. Best wishes to Bane, hope he is good.

Thanks, I will do that tomorrow. His hair has always been somewhat "curly" on his back (see picture). I wasn‘t sure if that‘s a puppy thing, a fault, or just normal Mastiff hair. I haven‘t seen as extreme before.

Thanks for sharing. I‘ll have the vet look at it as Boxergirl suggested. Not sure how common it is in dogs, but people around here have dealt with strong reactions to Pollen in the last weeks. I was wondering if it could be an allergy to a protein source in his food (maybe Chicken). Other than the excessive shedding, he‘s totally fine.

One more thing, we tried hot spot correcter from local hardware store, it only got worse. She would dig at the spot just below her chin until raw. I thought it was mites or the mange at that point.

So Gus has grass allergies, his eyes water a bit while outside. He don’t seem to care though.

It's hard to see the spots clearly in the picture, but it doesn't look particularly mangy.

Ella has a curly butt. It's very silly after a bath.

I‘m glad she is doing better! He doesn‘t really scratch his skin excessively and I don‘t see any red spots at this point. I wouldn‘t have noticed any difference in him other than the shedding.

I‘ll try to take some better pictures in daylight tomorrow. He didn‘t really have any spots until I brushed him earlier today. They are very minor, but the overall heavy shedding started about 1-2 weeks ago. No spots until today. Spot might even be the wrong word. It‘s more like small areas where you can see skin (the hair is thin in those areas). It‘s really not big patches with no hair at all.
I‘ll definitely keep you all posted on the vet‘s response! As always, thanks so much!

Not sure about the bald spots, ? maybe ask vet? Now is the shedding time with the change of weather as I had said Zeela is shedding like crazy. I think it is normal.

That makes sense. I‘ll take him to the vet this afternoon just to be on the safe side.

I‘ll definitely let you all know about the outcome.

Zeela that's what I was thinking also. Maybe Bane is shedding heavily because it's his first winter coat shedding. If he's not scratching or biting the spots, he might be having a blow out of his coat. Best to get it checked if unsure though.

Tyler, what are you giving Bane for fleas & ticks? I give Zeela the chewable pill, Simparica, it lasts 35 days & it is known to be the best on the market as of right now.

Diesel reacts like this to chicken in his dog food. But, he also gets bad rashes from grass, weeds, etc.

We just came back from the vet. She said it was caused by bacteria and antibiotics will resolve it. They did look at a sample under the microscope. We are also taking him there again for grooming tomorrow morning (they are going to use a special shampoo).

Really, what type of bacteria?

Glad you found out what it is. Hope it clears up soon. Is it topical or oral antibiotics? If oral I would ask the vet about giving a probiotic.

She mentioned it (I should have paid more attention but only heard bacteria). I can find out and will post.

They gave us the option to decide between oral and injection. We opted for the injection. She wasn‘t pushing for one or the other.

That sounds like what happened with Kryten. I choose topical treatment and we think that is what lead to his lick granulomas, so the injectable was probably a good call.
