Declining mastiff health

It's 1am as I'm writing this post, and I'm mostly just trying to vent while I ask for some advice on my dogs health. Any advice is appreciated. Also, sorry for the lengthy post.

My mastiff woke me up this morning to go outside, and when I took her out, I noticed she had diarrhea. A couple hours later, I fed her breakfast, which she ate normally. The rest of the day, I took her outside every couple of hours, sometimes less, so she could relieve herself. As the day went on, her diarrhea got more watery. I initially intended to feed her a bland diet with pumpkin to see if it would help, but around 8pm, she vomitted up a lot of kibble. After another 2 times of her vomiting, we decided to call a vet clinic that was 24 hours, as ours was closed by now.

They said it was best we bring her in, so we did. They did an exam, and ran some tests, and gave her a shot of something to stop the vomiting. They sent us home with some anti-vomiting pills and antibiotics. As we were leaving, she had another round of diarrhea in their waiting room, which I informed them there was a little bit of blood in it. They said they'd clean it up and sent us on our way.

From the time we got home, she laid on her bed and wouldn't move. At all. Nothing I did would get her to get up. When I took her outside, I had to push her up. We were told to wait 2 hours from the time she got her injections to feed her, so a little after two hours, I attempted to feed her about a quarter of what she normally eats. She wouldn't touch it. The few pieces I got her to lick up, she spat back out. I then attempted to give her some water, and she had no interest in that either.

Now it's after 1am, and I'm stress eating, and making random noises at my dog to wake her up every once in awhile cause I'm worried. We agreed to wait until morning, then call the vet again to see what they say if she still has not ate or had anything to drink by then.

The only other thing worth mentioning is that the vet thinks she's like this because of the antibiotics she was on for her UTI a week ago.

Any advice is appreciated, again. Anything to encourage her eating or to drink something. I already read some ideas on her from similiar posts, so I will look into trying those as well. Thank you.

i've never had a dog get that sick from taking antibiotics , what kind of antibiotic was she on ?......... good luck with her , hope she's better this morning ......

The medication is called Simplicef, 200mg tablet. I didn't mention that it does say monitor for signs of intestinal upset (loss of appetite, vomitting, and diarrhea)

I did get her to finally eat half of her normal amount with some pumpkin in it, and appears to have some energy back. She still has diarrhea, but it's not as frequent now.

Oh your poor baby..... Pumpkin is great.... I also would like to know about the dog food. Now I have my girls on raw chicken and veggie diet.... No starch no grains. I do know that's a personal preference. I'm telling you this because I started my little dog on it a couple years ago because of health issues. It really did save her from surgery. And I did have her on one of the so called best foods the vet recommended and didn't help. Anyway before I did this raw diet I would give my sick dogs cooked chicken with boiled plan white rice to help.... The vet said that would be easier on the dogs digestive system. I hope your fur baby gets well quickly.

Also a little blood in her stool is very normal in dogs from having diarrhea. Still you're going to want to keep an eye on that.

How is she now??

I normally fast my pup when her system is on the fritz.... skipping at least one meal, and then starting back with 1/2 sized meals and lots of probiotic support to get things restarted.
With lots of diarrhea, I'd probably offer some low sodium beef or chicken broth, to keep her hydrated. Especially with a UTI issue... you want to be able to flush the bladder often... but not the bowels, so much. :(

I hope she's on the mend!!

Did they check for a blockage? Your pup is having all the signs of an intestinal blockage. How is she now?

I initially thought it was some kind of blockage since she has a habit of finding odd things and eating them, but the vet said the timing and appearance of her vomit did not match the symptoms of a blockage.

After finishing her medications, she is much better now. I still do not know what was wrong with her or what caused it. My 3 year old dog has never been that sick before so it's very frustrating and scary.

She has an appointment with her regular vet on Saturday, so I will see what they have to say about it. I'm hoping it was the medication she was on for the UTI, and we can just use another antibiotic for future UTIs.

Thank you for the support! It's been very reassuring.

Kryten had an episode where he was vomiting, lethargic, shaking. I ended up taking him to the E-vet after a phone consultation as bloat was a possible cause. Thankfully it wasn't but he was diagnosed with a very severe flu. He also got an anti-nausea injection and 1 liter of sub-q fluids. He didn't eat for almost 24 hours after that visit which when he saw his regular vet turned out was normal for a dog that had been hit that hard with the flu. Hope she continues to feel better.

I was just thinking a dog flu might be the culprit. Heavens knows there are enough human flu bugs to go around this year!

I was also told dogs can get the flu from humans but humans won't catch it from dogs.....not share how true that is....going to google that

Ok googles it " Considering that people can be infected regardless of vaccination status and that not everyone will be immunized, it's important that we recognize the potential for humansto pass a microorganism like the influenza virus to our pets. Yes, your dog or cat could contract the flu from you.Jan 15, 2013

Thanks for all the info! It would make sense that my youngest would get sick if it was the flu since she's been to the vet recently and been around other dogs and my older one hasn't.

So I guess the only thing I'm curious about now is... what does a bad reaction to medications typically look like? Or does it really depend on the dog and medications?

When my dog was sick, I didn't even consider the medications or the flu being the culprit. I will read up on both so I'm prepared for the next sick dog.
