  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

My 175 lb. 5-year old male mastiff is experiencing some fungal (red inflammation, tender) areas under his front arm pits and deep in his paws. It is better to bathe more often with anti-fungal (i.e. Ketohex) or keep dry other ways, i.e. anti-fungal spray and bathe less often (i.e. 1-2 month). We live in a humid climate, in Lowcountry, SC although the dog is kept clean and dry in cool air inside during the day. If there is a different treatment, I'm open to hearing about it. We don't want to change our food as that is helping many other issues (dermatological and other).

Edit: I will add that we went through a long round of antibiotics for separate issues in November/December, which didn't resolve this issue.

Thanks for your input.

Can you show some pics? What did the vet say ? Did they test the bacteria on the pad?

Coconut oil is an antifungal. Feed him a tbsp am and pm , melt in your hand and gently cover the affected areas. It works wonders!! To prevent future fungal or bacterial issues (also an antibacterial) feed it every day

I'm not sure about fungal issues, but when my Dane had very red and irritated paws (between the toes, top and bottom of paw), my vet told me to apply zinc oxide (Gold Bond) daily. This worked pretty well for us, and Finn got very used to having his toes played with. The downside is that I had white powder all over my house.

My dog had fungal in his toes I looked online they said mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar and iodine. Soak paws in the solution few minutes every other day I did 3 times scrubbed in between his paws it dried him up. Before you do this look it up on the Internet for the ratios. I know if you use 1 solution more then the other it kinda burns their toes. I can't remember the ratios. Anyway it worked. My dog allergies so about 2 months later because he was lacking and chewing himself it did come back but I used the solution on him again 1 time and it's helping again

Thanks, all. These tips are helping, but not completely, so we are headed to the vet next week. I do notice better digestion w/ the additions of yogurt and probiotics. The coconut oil alleviated the crusty skin. The bath with hydrogen peroxides helped with paws, too. We are mostly focused on underarm moisture and redness around the anus. We haven't introduced new food, but we'll talk to the vet.

I would bathe twice weekly with anti-fungal shampoo (ketohex like you mentioned) during flare ups and use something like Miconahex+Triz wipes twice daily on affected areas. They are available on Amazon. The wipes are small, but very effective. I would ask your vet to do a quick cytology to make sure it's truly a yeast issue and not bacterial. I know you said it was not responsive to antibiotic therapy, but it may just not be an appropriate antibiotic. Either way, the ketohex shampoo and miconahex+triz wipes are both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. However, this will only treat the infection and not the underlying issue, which is likely allergies.
