First time Fila owner...or am I? :)

Hello everyone! First time posting here, though I've been a fan of the advice I find in this forum. Yesterday I picked up my first Fila puppy, he was born to a rescue after his sire and dam were surrendered due to BSL. I did see both of his parents, however, he just seems SO tiny to me! Either he's a runt, or maybe a litter imposter? xD At seven weeks old he weighs maybe five pounds, I'll get a more accurate weight at work today. I know for a fact that my lab/hound mix was larger and heavier at this age, and he has topped out at about eighty pounds. Opinions?

Cute puppy. He could just be a little puppy. My EM was small (for an EM) as a young puppy. He is now larger than some of the dogs that had up to 20 lbs on him at that age.

The numbers are in, scale says...

7.4# at 7 weeks 1 day old. Guess we'll make this a growth chart thread for Malak!

He's adorable!

Remember that its entirely possible that not all pups in a litter were concieved at the same time. A bitch releases eggs over a span of several days, up to a week! So if he was the last fertilized egg he could physically be several days to a week "younger" than his sibs.

And that would inturn potentially mean less food for him (he'd likely be last to the nipple unless his cartakers intervened), which would also affect his growth.

We've got another member with a tiny mastiff who was 5lbs at 8 weeks IIRR. I was doubtfull at first, but after thinking about it, its entirely possible I think.

Is he 5lbs or does he look 5lbs? If he actually weighs that at 7 weeks something is wrong. What state is the pup from? Is the BSL city/county or a new state law? Thanks

Thanks everyone! I'm excited to see how he grows either way :) And Ace, his actual weight at the clinic today was 7.4 pounds. As to the unfortunate breed discrimination, I do not have all the details other than that they were from Tennessee :( I was told by the good samaritan who rescued his parents that they were BSL victims, and everyone was excited (though not surprised!) when she gave birth to eleven pups soon afterwards.

I did see his parents, but I know Filas tend to have a varied look depending on who bred them. We could all be wrong and have a mastiff mutt I suppose!

His rescuer lives in Hardin county, just north of the Alabama/Tennessee border and usually saves from the county shelter. Former owners may live near there, or they may have come from another shelter. In retrospect it would have served me well to be aware :\

On another note, after being presented with toys of his own Malak decided he couldn't handle all the fun! Upon arrival at home, his two new brothers were fascinated by the tiny new family member :)

thank you. he truly looks more like a Pit mix and that would make a lot more sense regarding any kind of BSL. I am a HUGE Pit Bull lover and advocate!!! I love the pic with your other pups

These are pictures of baby daddy and baby mamma. I did see two dogs she referred to as their sire and dam at the kennel that matched these photos. Of course if he grows up to be a poodle he will still be my sweet baby, I'm just always interested in what my dogs may be :) More opinions? To me mama (fawn) has a narrow face and daddy looks more like an EM maybe?

Weigh in at 8 weeks old says.... 8.4 pounds. Only a pound in one week, but I love my little shrimp :)

They do have a kinda fila-ish look to them, though I'm hardly an expert on the breed. What were their temps like?

Father displayed what seemed to be a "hard" temp, not allowing me near the porch his rescue dad stood on with him. All was calm until I neared the bottom step and I was promptly informed that was his limit. Mom was very aloof, but without any verbalization.

Could be, though the rescuer is going to have trouble re-homing them (assuming he wants to) if they've started to bond to him.

Glad he's gaining weight!

I'm devastated to report that seven days after rescuing this darling baby, he fell victim to parvo. Today, after almost a week of battling this sickness with his tiny, frail body, he lost his battle. Malak will always be in our hearts, but this day has not been easy.
