Hello everyone!! First time poster. Have a question.

I grew up in Brazil. I am a huge Fila Brasileiro fan. I was always in love with them (still am). Finally, I am in position to get one to be part of my family.

Always thought I would get a male but now that I have renewed my research (since I am getting one), I have a question for everyone:

Given the choice and assuming money is not an issue, would you get a male or female puppy and why?

By the way, I do not have small kids in the house (my daughter is 22 and my son 16 years old).

Thank you in advance for the help and input. I appreciate it.

Thank you guys. Happy to be here. I am really excited!! Hopefully things will work out and I get my Fila. I am going to have a very hard time since I am not a very patience person  .

I have only personally had females, but I am not against a male.

over my years of having Filas, I have also had other dogs and size was a factor for me. my next Fila will be a male!!!!
I was given my first 2 Filas, so it truly didn't matter that they were females! then after them I guess I kind of was drawn to the
females(again size factor)as I had day to day experience with them.
my females have been a lot bitchier than my friends males, who have been so, so sweet. I will say the females seem to have
less patience.

I do not think you can go wrong with which ever you chose!!!

I don't have a Fila (I will someday) bu I have always had males and have two males now. I think in most breeds they are the more patient ones. I am a big enough bitch, no sense in adding another to the mix. LOL

LOL Rugers.

Thank you guys for the input. My preference is for a male but I am open to either really. Just curious to see/read what everyone else experience is.

Please, keep the opinions coming.

Thanks again.

I have both and i prefer the females as they seem to be more intune with you , males are to but not as much as the females.

Denna is our first girl... we didn't know about the late spay recommendations until later... going through at least two heats with a big girl is something to remember.
We are enjoying going for walks without all the stops for marking, though, and the worry over marking inside stores is gone. That's a BIG plus!

I think there is no right answer for what will fit you best - I have had a few of each sex and I prefer the boys although my girls have always been really special too...

Where in Florida are you ? We are in Miami :) IMG_1699.jpgIMG_2196.jpg

tess is really my first female...i think il stick with the girls from now on. no humping, no marking, my plants survive. i agree with that intuitive thing too.

Never had a Fila, but with any breed I prefer male dogs, always will. Not nearly as temperamental as females, that and the boys don't hold grudges.

My dad always had male gsd and male rotties together. They are funny and playful most of the time. Also they are very dependant on us asking for love all the time. But now i have only females at home. One rottie, one gsd and one lab. All are very independant and the best they do is to guard our property. Even our female lab Elsa used to alarm whenever she saw a stranger. I guess female dogs excels in guarding. But not sure.Though male dogs looks intimidating most of them are cuddlers. May be i am wrong. This is what i experienced.

There are good points and bad points to both.

With giant breeds they are healthier if allowed to mature before spay/neuter, with females that means you're going to deal with probly 2 heats possibly more.

Females, at least in the giant guard breeds, are often considered more serious and more guardy. The males are often more relaxed and forgiving. Of course individual dogs vary!

I prefer males personally!

Great observation and true to a large extent. Males Mastiffs are often easier to handle despite popular belief.

I can't comment on that since I've only owned males lol actually i take that back i grew up with a female border collie, she was one nasty bitch. Barely barked and was very stranger aggressive; she bit this guy once who came over a couple times to take a few things that we were giving away for free. the whole time he was here she never barked, just watched. On the 3rd day she was off leash and my parents warned him to leave, she wiggled through the door and bit the guys big toe off with multiple bite marks on the calf (this was in India so no law suit lol). She was an awesome guard dog lol i know border collies are not suppose to be guard but heck she was one hell of an exception to that rule.
she was extremely affectionate and protective. if we slept on the roof she would stay there and go for quick patrols around the whole house to make sure everything was ok. In the morning shed wake us up by licking our faces, one hell of a dog, very smart.

in ref. to male vs. female

The females tend to be more vocal and will let the stranger know their not wanted, also GET THE STOMACH TACKED AT SPAY TIME.
