puppy vaginitis, UTI, or bladder infection experiences???

Has anyone had a puppy that has puppy vaginitis? I was just wondering if anyone has any experience in this and could tell me how exactly their puppy acted or the symtoms they showed... I've read that it is common in 12 weeks to 6 months of age in large and giant breeds and that the females out grow it when they have their first season... Bella showed the signs.. she had mucus discharge after urinating and she has the matallic smell every once and awhile that'll go away after we give her a good bath...

I'm going to take her to the vet in the morning and make sure she doesnt have a UTI or bladder infection.. She is just peeing way to often and she lost her bladder while she was laying on the couch, she didn't even realize it.. she just laid there and peed then laid in it.. She is housebroken and hasnt had an accident in some time, she always lets us know when she wants to go out and when she was outside playing fetch, she'd stop and pee every so often...

I was wondering if anyone else has had an experience with any one of the puppy vaginitis, UTI or bladder infection... just trying to get an idea of this tonight since the vet is closed! But I'm going to get her in there first thing in the morning..

Sounds like an UTI. Yes, it is common and yes I would get her to the vet. More than likely you will get an antibiotic, if so I would ask for a probiotic also. If you can get a sample of her first urine of the morning that would be helpful. It doesn't have to be a lot.

Thanks, yeah that's what i've been reading.. I'll try and get a sample of her first urine.. This should be interesting.. lol

Sounds icky but if you have something small and flat, like a small plate, just slide it under her(from behind). If you take her out on leash it is easier. my vet always sent home a little plastic tray for us to use. This is much more pleasant then the vet having to draw urine with a needle and less expensive.

Get a sample yes, but then rush it into the vet, even if your apt isn't right away. Allowing it to sit, even in the fridge can cause crystal formation which can screw up the diagnosis.

Both of my two had UTI's, Arty at 8 weeks, Apollo at 9 months. Never did figure the cause of either, and they've had no issues since.

If they give you an antibiotic definetly ask for a probiotic, if they don't want to, or you forget I can get you a link to order the commonly prescribed vet one via Amazon. Especially for a female the probiotics can help prevent additional vaginal issues. Bothe the UTI and the antibiotic can cause additional vaginitus (think yeast infection) type symptoms that will require additional vet visits.

Ruth when your guys had the UTI's were you feeding raw? My little ACD struggled with it for about 6 months, she was even on proin, then we switched to raw and she was off of proin in about 4 weeks and we haven't had a problem since. I'm not sure if it was going raw or she just out grew it.

Bella was on purina puppy chow when I first started noticing the symtoms, now she is on earthborn holistic meadow feast.. could the food she was on been causing this issue? she definitely drinks massive amounts of water, she has a huge bowl and I fill it up atleast 3 times a day.. not sure how much of it actually ends up on the floor though.. lol

a ladle works great too for catching urine.
Our 10 mos old female em also Still has discharge from uerethra sometimes after peeing. yellow mucous like. Not everytime, but she licks a lot down there. Thinking uti. We've seen it off and on from 8 weeks old.
cant be vaginitis in that area can it?

I've done some research on the puppy vaginitis and one of the ways you can tell is the yellow mucus.. and they get a matallic smell.. which bellas has had since shes been about 11 weeks... she wasn't urinating alot or frequently and everything i've read said that there isn't an antiboitic for puppy vaginitis.. so i've tried to change her diet and make sure she has enough water.. but now shes showing signs of a UTI, and if she does have one, I'll feel bad that I didn't get her to the vet sooner... I'd consult a vet if I could go back in time..

I honestly don't know. I would get this UTI cleared up and if it doesn't come back I would lean towards it being the kibble.

We brought our EM girl home at 8 and 1/2 weeks. I knew something was wrong the night we got her home. (We had been in the car for 13 hours so I didn't figure it out right after we got her) She could not stop peeing...every few minutes, anywhere and everywhere, all over her crate....I felt so bad for her and the odor was horrible. I took her to the vet on Monday and he looked at her urine and said it was full of white blood cells and blood. He also cultured her urine. We put her on Clavomox and all was well. A week later he called to say the urine culture was negative...I thought that was really weird. We finished out the antibiotics and two days after her meds were gone it started back up again. I got the name of a new Dr. from someone here on the forum and we rushed her to Vet that afternoon. The new Dr. did a very thorough exam and history on her...not to mention she peed twice on the floor in front of him and once all over herself while she was laying down trying to rest. He thinks that she has some type of Vaginitis. She again had the blood and WBC in her urine. He checked her blood for kidney problems. He put her on Primor for an antibiotic ( for 2 weeks) in case she has an infection in her Vagina and he put her on an aspirin type of antinflammatory for 4 days. So far so good. She is doing extremely well with her potty training and always goes to the door and rings the cow bell we have hanging for her. I am so paranoid that when the antibiotic runs out, it will happen again...and it seems to happen in just a couple of hours! She goes from peeing just fine to having to every few minutes very quickly. I have never heard of such a thing. I have been giving her probiotics in her food like the earlier posts said. We have a follow up appt on July 24, so I will try to post and let you know if I learn anything more about Vaginitis. GOOD LUCK!

Sadie was diagnosed with vaginitis yesterday actually. She started peeing in her sleep or wake me up in the middle of the night. She has not done that in a long time. She also has had some discharge for a few day. She is on a strong course of antibiotics right now.

Apollo was on kinda half true raw half dehydrated raw, cause I was being fussy. He got the UTI, and an ear infection, in the space of a month and I said heck with it and switched him all the way over to raw. No problems since.

For Arty we'd only had him for less than a week at that point. He HAD been on kibble (and not a horrid one though not one I'd have picked), but due to a seriously hellish day the person doing the transport forgot to bring the little bag of food that was supposed to come with him (he was supposed to be arriving about 6pm-ish, it was midnight when he actually pulled into the driveway). 4 days later the puppy who HAD been peeing once ever couple hours started peeing every 5 minutes. We did put him right to true raw as soon as he walked in the door, but for all I know he'd had the UTI when he got here and just hadn't been showing any symptoms yet.

I would say is possible. But its hard to say for sure after just one. You might try adding a little water, or unsalted broth (chicken or beef of your choice) to her kibble. Extra water is always good to help flush the system.

Basic puppy vaginitis there ISN'T much they can do, except give you basic instructions on how to appropriately clean. However its possible that some of the gunk got into the ueretha and caused an infection. Keep an eye on her though as you finish up the antibiotic and for the next couple weeks, its possible that the UTI and/or the antibiotics can damage the good bacteria thats supposed to be in the vagina causing a form of vaginitis that needs treatment (kinda like human women can get a yeast infection after being on an antibiotic themselves). At any rate if it IS puppy vaginitis its probly worth a quick vet check, just to be safe, and to see if they can advise on a better cleaning method. But I'd not accept an antibiotic or anything of the like for it unless the vet could convince me it was the bad kind of vaginitis (does that make sense?).

I just got back from the vet with Bella and her Ph balance was off... the vet said normal Ph is a 6 and Bella is at 8.. hmm.. But she said her urine was good, no crystals, no blood, nothing out of the normal besides the Ph

Our cat had bad a UTI once... we put her on cranberry tablets (specifically for cats), and since she's been on those (for about 10 years now), we haven't had a problem.

I see they also have cranberries in our kibble (Solid Gold Wolf Pup), and also a number of holistic treats include cranberry... it might be worth checking into adding more cranberry to the diet to help acidify the urine and keep the crystals away.
