  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

First day at forever home.

From my experience they don't act like they are guarding unless they need to. Kryten will be 7 in January and I can count less than 10 times that he has gone into full guard mode. Most of the times he just watches but is more than willing to be pet by everyone he sees. Half of the time he has gone into guard mode have been a non-resident opening the front door when I've been home. The same person can enter easily if I'm not home. Other times are when he doesn't like how someone is acting nearby. Once he went into full guard mode for no apparent reason.
Just because they don't seem like they are guarding doesn't mean they aren't, it just means they don't see anything to be concerned about.

Lol, an English Mastiff will surprise you. They seem so docile like they wouldn't hurt a fly. And they are gentle giants. But I bet he watches. If ever there was a real threat, you would probably see a whole new side of Gus! I love E.M. they are usually so balanced and even tempered, and also protective. He's beautiful!
Well, I just seen a different side to Gus this evening. My son was having a friend sleep over, I called the boys to the living room and Gus spotted our guest. I let Gus in for the evening after we went and got something to eat. Gus new we had company and was leary when he came in, smelling the “new shoes and jackets” and different smells. Anyways he jumped up, positioned himself on the other side of me and gruffed and growled a bit until I called him down. He had the most serious stance to date. He tried to make himself as big as he could. He did calm down to about 50 percent of full alert. After the boys left the room, Gus was somewhat still in attention mode for about three minutes, then he laid down and sighed real big, then went back to sleep. For what it’s worth, I’m sure some will wonder, Gus was introduced when company arrived while outside. He kept his normal, yeah I see you, that’s close enough attitude. Anyways, just un update on a recent conversation. While I want a watchdog, I will never tolerate an aggressive dog. That wasn’t the case here.

It saddens me to even post this, I am wanting to re-home Gus. Our lives have become to busy to allow Gus the attention he deserves. Gus was born on 12/29/17. He is currently 34” at the shoulder. He is current on vaccines and rabies, he is chipped. The only issue Gus has is he is aloof with strangers. He will distance himself from strangers, no aggressive behavior, just the normal gruffing and some barking from 15-20 yards away (outside). When we have visitors, I tell company to pay him no attention, Gus will come around in less than an hour if he is not bothered by the “company”. Gus will then approach the company slowly to allow some petting, then he wants the attention. He is a great watch dog now, and in typical fashion, very intimidating by size alone. Gus is fully intact with full AKC papers with no restrictions. Gus has lived on a mini farm with socialization with animals, not so much socialization in a town or neighborhood atmosphere. Gus does well with dogs he is introduced too, I have never seen him interact with a strange dog. Gus is fully house trained and stays inside if we are away and at night time. I almost forgot, he doesn’t lead well with a collar but does well with a harness. I would like to have $1200.00 for him, Feel free to pm me if interested. I have never breed him with another female, but he knows what it’s about, read my first couple of post bringing Gus home with Georgia in heat. I will only let him go with someone from here that is known or if someone can let me know that someone they know will be good to him. This is a great bunch of people on this forum.

Sorry to hear. Gus is an awesome dog. Not sure if it applies in your case, but have you checked with breeder if they could take him back? I‘d take him if we didn‘t have another male already. However, I‘ll reach out to some trusted Mastiff friends in the area.

Trg, where are you located, if you don't mind sharing? I agree with TylerDurden. Please check with your breeder. If you purchased him on a contract, you may be obligated to return him to them.

I don't want to sound judgemental, so I hope you don't take it that way trg. What does too busy mean for Gus? Maybe if you tell us what's going on, or what has changed, we can help you come up with a way to keep him. Really not trying to judge here, just wanting to help if possible.

I am in NC, no obligation, breeder only said they would take him back if I could no longer take care of him. Basically if I was going to send him to a rescue etc..,
