Entropion

Always something with this girl. I’m calling the vet tomorrow and hopefully getting an appointment for Tuesday. Her left eye (right side of the photos) has been watering and itchy for about a week. No green or yellow discharge. And the more and more I look at her photos and at her eye, I think it may be entropion. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The next dilemma: I’m assuming if this is Entropion, she will need surgery. She will be 18 months old at the end of this month. If she needs to be put under, I would like to just do it once. I would like to have her spayed and the entropion surgery at the same time. Do I try to find a way to make her eye feel better until after she has another heat (first one was 13mo)? Or do I spay a little early so we don’t risk any eye damage and being put under twice?

I don't know. Usually you'd have noticed problems earlier. Can you see any hairs poking her eye? I don't. Hopefully it's just an infection that some eye goo (that's the scientific name) will clear up. If it does end up being something like entropion, I would definitely have it taken care of when you spay her. Along with a dental and a good short nail clip. Get it all done at once. How old is she now? I think you'd be okay to spay her at any time that works best for you now. Since she had her first heat at a later age, if you had her spayed before her second heat you'd cut down those mammary cancer risks significantly.

One of the pups we reared had this a couple of months ago, it was a tiny tiny bit of dried grass, it irritated his eye,

No, I don’t see any hairs poking her. I just figured maybe they were so little or so flipped in that I couldn’t see them. I do believe eye goo is the technical term, that’s what I’ve been calling it anyway. We have some left over from her last eye problem. I think it was around spring time, both her eyes watered and the vet said he didn’t see anything of concern and to give her the eye goo. The eye goo cleared it up in a few days and all was well until last week. But I know you’re suggestion some newly prescribed eye goo. The stuff I have contains a steroid and I’ve read that I can cause an eye scratch to scar permanently.

She is 17 months old right now. So that’s kind of what I was thinking too. If we do need an eye surgery, just do it all now. We have waited a decent amount of time, tried our best..... but let’s just hope it’s some grass! Thanks glen, I’m hoping it’s something silly :). Now if only she will let me open her eye lid for long enough to have a look around in there

I agree with Boxergirl, if she needs surgery I would get it all done at once. You said your girl is 17 months right? I think you're okay to spay now especially since she has already been through one heat.

does look entropian , as boxergirl said , it's surprising it didn't show up earlier ....... i was thinking it may be possible something irritating the eyelid causing it to swell into the eye .... is the vet doing the spay an ophthalmologist ? if not you may want to make sure the vet doing the spay does that eye surgery a lot , it can be botched ....... at least have them make sure there is nothing in the eyelid causing it to be swollen like it appears in the pics ......

I’m really hoping it’s just something irritating her eye, that would be the best case scenario. I will ask my vet about the eye surgery and how experienced they are with it. Thanks for the heads up!

She'd be fine to spay now. You have the opportunity to get this done before her second heat which would drastically reduce her chances of mammary cancer. Since you plan to spay her anyway, I think you're good to go. I've never had a dog with entropion, but the one's I've seen look different than Lettie. I think you've got an eye infection going on. I hope so, anyway.

You know, I think you might be right. I have had a few chances to look at her eye now. When I looked under her upper eyelid, I could see 3 little white “hairs”. So I kinda swiped at one with my finger and now there are 2. I have no idea what they could be, but they are not there on her other eye. Maybe carpet fibers or something. But since yesterday, she seems to be doing a little better. She has been winking at us less and it hasn’t been watering as much. She has a vet appointment for tomorrow at 4pm. I’ll update everyone after that.

Just got back from the vet. She doesn’t think Lettie has entropion! Yay :). She thinks it may just be irritated from a foreign object. We were given some steroid/antibiotic eye ointment and some antihistamine tablets. She also warned us to watch her closely and make sure she isn’t getting worse. If she does get worse then we have to stop all medication and bring her back in.
