Learning about this rain stuff

So today it is finally raining. I have been celebrating most the day.... and then I learned the hard way.

Rain is wet. It makes things wet. Like shoes. Wet shoes are slippery. Slippery and stairs don't mix.
Ouch.

So no gym today. The dogs are happy about that. And given we had a couple of super suspicious looking guys come to the door I'm thinking maybe staying home isn't a terrible idea regardless of bruised tail bones and throbbing legs and arms.

Ha and I realized that wasn't nearly enough about my dogs so let me add that the dogs were extremely concerned about the fall and they were really suspicous about the strangers also. After that fall they refused to leave my side and when I tried to put Diesel in his crate he outright refused which is not at all like him. So I have my two guardian angel dogs at my side for the rest of the day.

Dogs are great, especially when suspicious strangers are at the door......Chev is a remarkable "woof woofer." Coal...well, my wife tells he that Coal "can't hold his licker." He licks everything, even strangers.

you got to invest in big black boots like I do. I made the mistake of taking Zeela out with flip flops on & I got some serious road rash. I gear up to take her out.
Hang tough....

I have duck boots and other seasonal appropriate boots but I was wearing my gym shoes as I was about to head out to the gym when it happened. I think I just need to pay attention when I am coming in from the rain and remember that wet shoes can make me slip.

Sadly I literally fell down the stairs again last night (inside stairs)! This time my shoes were not wet, I was going slow and I was holding the rail. And I slipped and fell anyways. Except this time I was trying so hard not to fall that I clung to the rail and twisted and broke my toe. :/

I don't even understand how I managed to slip and fall when I was being so careful but it is so frustrating.

Oh man, Nik. Broken toes really hurt. The running joke around here is that I need body armor. I hurt myself in ways that no normal person hurts themselves. Which toe is it?

Sorry to hear! That‘s painful!

You all be careful when there is snow and ice (starting soon) if that‘s a thing were you live. I was never worried about it, but with large dogs, it‘s really dangerous.

I am led to understand that it is a thing where I live now. This will be my first winter here so the dogs and I will all learn about snow and ice together.

Invest in some good snow boots with traction. Yup, winter sucks, a whole new element to dealing with snow.
Hope your toes heals soon, ouch!

Snow isn't really something to worry a lot about, unless there is a lot of it or it's on a slope. The problem is when it becomes ice or gets compacted tightly (ice-like), then you really need to move carefully. Clearing sidewalks quickly after a storm, or during one if it's really snowing, can help prevent the compacting issue and I've found that scattering non clumping cat litter on icy patches works better than salt to prevent slipping. Salt will work in areas that stay warm enough, it gets below the freezing point of salt water here, but it can cause damage to concrete and plants.

Costco carried 'strap-on' cleats for snow/ice last year here in the Seattle area. Good for any shoe. I'll have to dig them out again, although we don't get much of that frozen stuff around here, normally.

Hope your toe - and tail-bone - feel better soon!

My hubby did a full tilt off the steps when we lived in VA and had freezing rain over night (cowboy boots are really bad as snow boots). He fractured some vertebrae and was on bed rest for a few weeks Not fun. Not fun at all.
