Waxy Ear Goo

I am in the middle of a battle with Mr. Chev (mastiff) and brown-maroon waxy stuff in his right ear, facing me. I clean it out with Q-tips, and a few days later, it seems to be back, sometimes with a vengeance. I purchased some Zymax, and it relieves the head-shaking and itch, but it does not heal the problem. Is this something I just have to contend with, or is there something more curative ??? thanks.Pink Toenail.jpg

I've been fighting the one-dirty-ear syndrome with Denna since the day she came home.
Vet checked them out and said, "just dirt"... no yeast, no mites. The vet really wasn't concerned. :(

After 5 years of continuous cleaning cycles (still just ONE dirty ear, always the same one), we finally had 1 year of two clean ears... a good round of Zymox gel got them clean, and Snooks Ear Oil kept them clean. Then... we had a relapse this spring. GRRRRRR. I thought it was an allergic reaction to a new supplement that was heavy with flax seeds. I had stopped using the ear oil, so not sure if that would have prevented it or not... but as of this week, 3 months after the first ear returned to it's dirty state, we now have TWO dirty ears. AGHHHHHH!!!!

We're on a round of Zymox gel again trying to get them clean.
She's back on food I know we fed during her "clean period"... so my best guess now is just environmental allergies.
But getting them clean to stay clean has been a major journey for us. I hope yours goes much easier than ours.

If you can nail it down to a food allergy, that would help... but if it's just spring/summer pollen or dust issues, it can be a headache (for both dog and humans!). :(

Does the ear smell? (yeast and fungus both will smell)
If you rub the 'ear dirt' on a tissue and put a drop of water on it, does it turn red? (that would indicate mites)

I will do that....it looks like, for the time being, the ear is clean. I will do the "does it turn red" thing. Thanks. No smell at all.053.JPG

Hi pastor dave, hope your enjoying all those beautiful walks.
Budcuss as had the same problem since we got him, iv had vet check ect ear cleaners ect, 6 months ago i put them on a dyna powder, human grade, its for internal mites and natural well being, 8 weeks into giving him it every day his ears are totally clean. Apparently it helps with joints also so its a win win and all natural no chemicals, if i can go a natural route i will. It might be a coincidence but its worked for bud.
Have a nice day

Chev.jpg Thank you for your kind response. Yes, the walks in the morning are...well.....beautiful. The dogs are putting pressure on me to do an evening "outing", too. When I say "PennDot", they perk up and Chev starts dancing. It is apparently very important to them to get out of the house a while.
I will look for "Dyna Powder" and see if I can find some. Thanks again...have a great day !! Pic: Mr. Chev watching me intently, probably wanting a dry roasted peanut. Yes, I do indulge him !!!

Pastor Dave, I'm 99% sure that Dyna Powder is diatomaceous earth. I think Dyna Powder is just a brand name. I'm sure Glen will let us know. If so, it's usually available at farm stores, but it absolutely must be food grade. I've never heard of using it for ears, but it's great for fleas and other internal parasites.

I agree with @Nik . Great picture.

I‘m always fascinated by all your knowledge @Boxergirl . You should have your own website/blog/app. :)

Ha! Thanks. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands or have had too many "special" dogs. I figure that even tossing out ideas can give someone something to check into. I also believe that Glen is in the UK and their products can be different than ours, so I'm curious to see if Dyna Powder is actually the same as the food grade DE here in the US.

My girl also had one her right ear sticky and dirty, i cleaned her right ear every two days and it got really dirty ,the left one i cleaned a little every few weeks, so when i switched her to different food week ago ,all dirt and sticky is gone especially in her problematic right ear, i havent clean her ears in few days but i am checking every day and ears are clean :) so must be something food related so pastor you could also try switching food maybe that helps like in my case.
