Stupid Cancer

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. Jake now has an osteosarcoma in his opposite leg from where we had the tumor removed. He started limping really bad this week so I took him in to get checked out. They did an xray and discovered this. He is on medications to make him comfortable now, but we have decided not to pursue any type of further treatment for this. He is moving a lot better this morning from the medication. We want the remainder of his life to be as happy and pain free as possible. I have a feeling this is going to go far too fast for me, his 7th birthday is on August 15th and he is going to have the best most spoiled birthday ever.

This is from the day we brought him home.

I‘m very sorry @Jakesmum . It is always heartbreaking to read about stories that involve cancer in dogs. I‘m sure he had a wonderful life, and I hope he‘s going to enjoy an amazing birthday party. Enjoy the time with him.
@marke I‘m sorry to hear about this. Cancer is simply unfair, and yes, it sucks!

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope it goes much slower than expected and that you have a ton of happy days and experiences ahead of you.

And I second the sentiment that cancer sucks.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. I *know* he has had the best life with you. You've gone through so much with him and always done what was best for Jake. I hope that his birthday is a huge celebration full of everything he loves best. Your family will be in my thoughts.

Thank you! He's been through far too much and certainly doesn't deserve this.

Cancer id a devilish, miserable disease. Our black lab named Ebby left some blood in her water dish. I thought it was from a splinter, but it turned out to be a cancer under her tongue. We waited as long as we could to make that last trip to the vet. Ebby was acting so happy to be at the vet's office, as sorry a condition as she was in. We all cried. As for me, my only hope is ...as with all things...in the Lord and the idea that we will see our pets again. I pray that your Jake will feel better, through it all. That's all I can ask for. I had hoped after Jake's long illness that you'd have the rest of his life without incident, without pain and without doctors. You have been through so much for so long, and he looked like he had turned a corner and the rest of his life would be spent peacefully and happily at your side. To say that this is unfair is a gross understatement, it is a nightmare. I wish I could reach out and hug all of you. I know how much the big guy means to you. All of us here on the Forum know how deep the love goes with our dear Mastiffs. The thought of being without them is like being without air...unimaginable.

I ache for you...I ache for him and all your family. May God in his infinite wisdom give all of you one last glorious summer, and enough memories to fill the Mastiff-sized hole that his passing will leave in your hearts. You are one of the best Dog Moms I have ever met. I hold you and your family in the highest esteem for the care and effort that you have extended to provide for Jake and his difficult health journey. I'm crying. I feel like I walked part of that journey with you, I think we all feel that. I wish that I could do something for you...for him.

I'm here (well PM mostly) if you need to talk or cry or just unload.

Thank you! I cried again reading this. We have worked so hard to get his health in order, but it's just not meant to be for our precious boy. He's still happy and the medication is making him comfortable and he had a fabulous weekend camping. I don't know why he ended up having so many health issues, but there has to be a reason for it.

So sorry to hear about Jake.
I can tell you that having a dog with a serious medical condition, even if his isn't a risk to his life, has made me a better person. I'm more observant since the clues he gives off tend to be subtle but if I miss them he ends up in pain. I'm more tolerant because I know that what he can do at times is far less than he wants to do and that frustration is the cause for the behavior not defiance. I can communicate better (both with humans and dogs) since I had to be his voice and had to understand so that my actions/confusion didn't make things worse.
I would give anything for Kryten to not have his problem but since I can't change that for him the best I can do is use it to improve myself and help others that are newer on this path than I am.
Based on what I have read over the years it seems Jake has done the same for you.

I agree Smokeycat, Jake came into my life for a reason and he has taught me so much about myself and how I interact with humans and dogs. I would do anything for him, but I can only do what is best for him and to pass what I have learned on to other animal owners who are seeking help through their journey. Thank you for your kind words.
