Water intake

How much water do your Mastiffs drink per day (approximately)? I know it varies by size, weather conditions, food intake etc. so just looking for an average. Bane sometimes drinks up to a gallon or more (in summer).

Lettie will go all day without drinking sometimes then gulp down a whole bunch at one time. It’s like she goes into a trance while she drinks. I have to tell her “enough” sometimes when she gets excessive. When she plays in the heat, she is much more consistent with taking regular water breaks, luckily.

I don't really measure the amount they drink I just refill the bowls as needed (usually multiple times a day) but of course the cats share the same bowls. My dogs will also try to gulp up water sometimes and I need to tell them to slow down or have them pause before letting them drink more.

That's a good question, one that I can't answer. The main dog dish (raised) holds about 2 cups of water and there are times that Kryten will drink all of it in one go, usually when we get home after being gone for a few hours as he doesn't drink when we are out. Typically however he will drink some of the water, we then need to dump out the rest and refill the bowl as no one wants to drink the slime left in the bowl, including Kryten. Four out of the five animals use that as their primary water bowl, most likely since it does get changed several times a day, but all but Kryten also use the larger bowl that's on the floor. It holds about 4 cups and they tend to drink 1/2 -3/4 of it each day

That’s another thing Lettie does. She won’t drink unless we are home. We always leave fresh water when we are gone, but she won’t touch it until we get back.

Interesting, I have no idea how much water she drinks per day. I know she drinks more in the heat and she likes to drink out of a water bottle when we are outside. I will say that for a large dog, I find it weird that she seems not drink that much, maybe part camel.

I also can't say exactly how much my guys drink. I have bowls of water out and Ella and Roy drink from them, but mostly they all drink from the bathtub faucet. Al drinks almost exclusively from the tub. The water bell does ring a lot in the summer months. I'm home most of the time, so they're lucky that I can turn the water on for them.

Lol, yes. They do. We taught the dogs to ring a bell to go out, but Al would bark for a drink from the tub. He doesn't drink from a bowl unless he's desperate. He also gets very worked up about things, so when he barks for a drink he keeps escalating in enthusiasm and it hurts my husband's ears. I decided to put a bell next to the tub. He mostly uses it. Unfortunately, Al is the guy that even though he knows a thing and does it multiple times a day ... it's always new. And he gets confused. He'll ring the gate or the wall or the couch instead of the bell by the door. Here's Al forgetting how to ring the water bell. My daughter thought is was too funny and made me video it. (The bell came from the outdoor decoration section of Tuesday Morning. It's the same one we use by the front door. No nails get stuck in it like they do the jingle bell type.)

That is hilarious. The demand barking is something Diesel used to do badly but for everything. He has gotten better at communicating with us without the barking. I like the bell you used. I hadn't thought about nails getting caught and the appearance is a lot more appealing as well. Diesel uses the potty bell or rather abuses it lol

Denna gets a lot of water in her meals - about a cup of water for supplement "gravy" with her raw food diet, which is also very moist.

In the winter, she rarely drinks water outside of mealtime...
In the summer she drinks after walks and a few sips randomly... but if I turn on the hose, she'll CHOMP on the water stream for as long as I can stand there... I'm not sure how much she actually intakes, but it keeps her mouth well rinsed!

When we go camping near the Columbia River in the summer, she'll swim and drink all day... and her pee is VERY clear... I have to keep tabs on her for hyponatremia when we're near the river, she drinks that much, just from being in the water at mouth-level.
