Gassy doggy

I've had my CC girl for 8 months now. She is 18 months old. She has terrible gas. She's had it for as long as I've had her. I've tried different foods but nothing so far has helped. She has tried TOTW with no chicken, Wholehearted large breed, and is currently on Merrick grain free beef. She still toots all the time and it smells awful.

What can I do to help? Another food? I've tried probiotics but it didn't help. Suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

How long have you had her on the new food? Has she been on it long enough to see change.....has she been vet checked? What does your vet say? Does she get enough exercise ....sometimes lack of exercise can make a dog constipated ...how is her bowel movements ?

My mothers little dog had the same problems until she switched him to lamb and rice.....

I feed my girls raw diet... with about a cup of green veggies cut up... mind you Bella is 130lbs so she get 2 to 3% of her weight in raw ground meats I also give her raw meaty bones....if the probiotics done help I done know what to tell you other then keep trying her on different foods....

Adding a digestive enzyme supplement was the only thing that solved Kryten's extreme gas issues that he had when younger. The protein in a food did affect how bad it was. Fish, pork and especially Turkey could make him reach toxic levels.

I agree w the other comments. Stick with one of the foods for a while, and as long as her stools are firm and not loose, try not to change it.
Another cause for being too gassy could also be over feeding. Or feeding too frequently.
Apple Cider Vinegar helps. I add a couple of capfuls to a bowl of water. My dogs love it.

Agree with april, i give apple cider vinegar also, buds always done loud farts but they dont clear the room now, he likes to do it he knows it makes me laugh and wiggles over just after hes done it for a fuss, wonderful world of mastiffs hahaha

Agree with everyone above! I live with boxers and they're famous for clearing rooms with their gas. Food does have a lot to do with it for us. One of my guys, the one that I can't keep weight on, uses digestive enzymes. It helps. Good luck!

I see in your picture that you have a cat. She's not getting into the cat food at all, is she? When Otis gets into Nox's cat food he's extremely gassy. Just a thought.

The current food she's on she has been on for a couple of months. Her bowel movements are fine if somewhat excessive in comparison to our other large dog.

She's definitely not being over fed. She's a small CC (80 pounds) and only gets 2 1/2 cups total a day split into two feedings. She was getting a little chubby on 3 cups a day hence the decrease.

I just ordered a probiotic/enzyme combo that had some superb reviews so I will give that a try a see.

I do find that the protein source does make a difference. It was worse on chicken for sure.

With all the other dogs I have ever had, I rotated protein sources every month (basically every bag). Is that not recommended with a CC? Is the brand a bigger factor than the protein source? For example, is it ok to switch proteins but stay in the same brand like Merrick beef to Merrick bison?

Well... Not usually. However while I was out of town, she figured out how to open the cabinet and stole plastic cups of wet cat food... My husband found her stash and the remnants of the empty packages...they are too smart!

Sounds like your doing everything right
The enzyme will probably help. I know what you mean about chicken based foods. They make them smell horrible! Maybe try sticking w the one protein source for a while and see if it improves. Logan is doing good on lamb. He was on chicken and his stools were always too soft, and very smelly!!

My dogs are gassier and have bigger poops on kibble than on raw. When giving kibble, I found it helps to wet it down.

I give Zeela the Taste of the Wild canned food mixed with her dry & oh yeah, she gets some nasty gas fumes! I guess there is something in it. She almost made a friend of mine throw up. Horrible. Lol. Oh well, she likes the food.

Two words that are closely associated: Mastiff and Gas.

Well, the gang has welcomed you aboard, as do I, and you've heard some very good suggestions. I have nothing to add really. My dog Bailey's farts do, occasionally, clear the room, but generally, they are survivable. She gets Acana for her dry food and I cook her meats for her (such a baby.)

After trying the above suggestions, I'd say, Relax! Large dogs, by-and-large, have smelly farts...it goes with the territory. But, thank your lucky stars that a Mastiff's farts are offset by their sweet nature and the depth of their love for their humans.

For every puppy we brought home, we we told (after the fact)... "oh, that breed has the WORST farts!!!"... and the rescue bulldog really could clear the room! We got him on a better quality kibble and lots of probiotic and enzymatic support along with a supplement that included yucca schidigera (an herb that binds nitrogen and destinks farts). We were able to remove the yucca supplement in a few months, with less than a 10% increase in stinky emissions, which we counted as success.

I'd keep giving probiotics long term. They don't hurt, and sometimes can take a long time to really get a good hold in the gut. Especially if feeding dry kibble, which doesn't always feed the right gut-bugs for long-term health. If your dog is ok with yogurt, a plain, live, unflavored yogurt would be a good adder... but sometimes dairy causes gas... so, "good" is very dog-dependent on that one! Denna is raw fed, and STILL gets weekly doses of added probiotics in her supplement mixtures.

Denna rarely has stinky farts (normally associated with a processed treat of some sort)... and rarely even farts (that I hear, anyway)... most of the time when she lets one loose, it's as she heads up stairs (right in front of me, of course).
