  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Maybe going into heat?

If she's not having UTI issues, then you might be just fine after a heat or two. I wish I had done the episioplasty, however it turns out that doing it during her spay wouldn't have been a good idea. She had complications and keeping her under longer might have been dangerous. She had a serious bleed and then they weren't able to regulate her temperature. So I think for most dogs it could be done at the same time, but it worked out better for Ella that we didn't do it. Does that make sense? Ella also has allergies and she gets irritation on all of her "under" areas, including that flap of skin that covers the vulva. I think without the allergies she would have fewer issues. Anyway, I think you're fine to wait and see how things go. Ella did have a dental. They did it while she was under but before they started the spay surgery. Even though we brush her teeth, she's prone to tartar. I'm glad we had it done.

Thanks for all the advice, I always appreciate it! When is the worst of the bleeding? I know it’s only the first day, it will get worse for sure, but when? Right now it’s just drops here and there.

I would say a lot like us. Spotting the first day, then a little heavier the second day etc.... our little schnauzer would bleed for about 7 days. It would get lighter toward the end. She actually did a very good job of keeping herself clean

I agree with April. Ella's first heat was her messiest. She did a good job keeping clean after that. I did still keep up with helping her clean herself because some of the mess got trapped under that flap of skin.

I think I have a very dainty and lady-like pup lol! So far she still hasn’t bled much at all! Just a couple drips when she stands up, if that. She’s been keeping herself very clean. She’s not obsessive about cleaning herself, she’s just doing it when she needs to. Just yesterday we put the cardboard stuff on the floor and it’s a nightmare. It’s bubbled up everywhere and ripping at seams. We are tearing that junk up and buying a carpet remnant today. Our house is super small so I think we are just going to cover the main areas. If she stays this way, it’s going to be a breeze! But of coarse I’m expecting it to get worse. Thanks for asking!

My schnauzer didn't bleed very much her first heat, which I was thankful for. By her second heat which was a little heavier, she was on top of keeping herself clean...

I have never had a large breed female, but my neighbor had a female Dane. The Dane did not do a good job of cleaning herself, and they had a mess!! They had to confine her to the utility room...

Sounds like Lettie is good at keeping herself clean. Hopefully it won't get too bad. Glad she's doing well.... Watch out for those boys ;)

Haha hopefully she stays this way. So far, no signs of boys. Does that happen right away or it it mostly when they are most fertile (the 9-14 day window you told me)?

I never had a problem with boys. Ella was quite the hussy, marking all kinds of things in the front yard. None of the dogs that walk by were the least bit interested, and I know at least two of them are intact. Poor Ella. Nobody wanted to be her suitor.

Lucky you!!
Aww. Maybe the were intimidated by Miss Ella.

Sophie had dogs coming in droves the first heat. And all of them were small to medium sized dogs. I don't even know where they were coming from. We couldn't get rid of them!.. I would open the blinds in the morning.. and they would be sitting there! It was kinda creepy. Lol. One lady had to come get her maltipoo male. He was so cute. She was devastated couldn't find him anywhere. He was on our door stoop waiting for Sophie to come out. Then we had the ugly brown dog that stayed under our car. We would chase him off, and he would come right back. He wasn't eating or drinking. He stayed for days..

I don't know if it's a small dog thing, but we had a lot of suitors. And she would sit in the window and whine to go out to them. It wasn't to bad of a problem cause the dogs were small. But I would be cautious of a bunch of big males hanging around w one thing on their mind. I hope Jarena doesn't have the many dogs that we did. :)

It was when she started marking a lot. Some came when she was still bleeding, but a lot came at the 7-14 days after the first sign of blood. Hopefully she won't attract too much attention :)

Well, tomorrow it will be a week! So far this is a breeze! Bonus: she’s sweeter too lol she wants to snuggle and nap mostly.... til Matt gets home. He is the one who plays with her most so she gets hyper when he gets home.

She is still eating very well, no change actually. I had a feeling my food monster wouldn’t have a problem with appetite! No sign of any boys yet (I recently read that a female in heat can even attract male coyotes)!

We bought a carpet remnant that covers the living room and the hallway. She really is doing a great job at keeping herself clean, like really clean. I check her often but so far we haven’t needed to baby wipe her much. She has a few drops occasionally but it hasn’t been bad at all!

I'm glad she's doing so well! Sophie was really clingy and sweet also during her time. We bred Sophie twice. She was super sweet when pregnant. And she took such good care of her puppies. She kept them super clean as well. I know your not going to breed her, but I bet Lettie would be a good mom too..
I didn't know that about the coyotes. Yikes!! Hopefully y'all won't get any suitors..

Aww, it’s nice to hear about good doggy moms. I’ve never heard of coyotes near our house. I have seen foxes a few times near us, that’s about it. We just found out our neighbors haven’t spayed any of their 3 dogs. Thankfully they have only females, because their dogs are ALWAYS loose. Ugh, that’s only one of the many problems we have with them .

Glad y'all don't have to deal w coyotes.

I hate when people let their dogs run the neighborhood off leash!! It burns me up.

I will dig up the pics of Sophie's pups on our hard drive. OMG they are sooo cute! Tiny little mini. schnauzers. 3 were black and white. One male we named Boudreaux. He was a handful. He weighed 5 lbs, and thought he was the biggest, baddest thing ever!

Oh, and Lettie should be almost finished w bleeding. Probably be just a bit of spotting. She may get a little more swollen and maybe a little drippy, if you know what I mean.

Ok I thought I was crazy yesterday when I noticed she seemed more swollen! Thanks for all of the tips and advice!

Is it also normal for her to get more mopey? This morning she had a loose stool twice (nothing has changed, don’t know why) and she has been tired and mopey. She’s just relaxing in her crate with the door open, then she followed me to the bathroom and sprawled out in the hall way. Poor girl just seems so tired.

Yeah, poor Lettie. She probably feels like we feel when we are visited by aunt Flo. Lucky for her it's not every month ;)

AND JUST LIKE THAT SHES DONE! omg it’s like a switch was flipped. Her vulva has gone down in swelling and she’s back to her naughty self! Over the last hour it’s like someone took away her halo and horns were applied. She was so sweet while she was in heat. And she was easy, snuggly and sleepy. Now our crazy girl is back in full force!
I mean, she’s still a good girl.... just not *as* good lol.
