Cherry Eye

I had a Cherry Eye removed from Max yesterday. Of course , he was the hit of the clinic. I went in determined to dictate what I wanted done...REMOVE the gland. She did not want to do this. I only have information from reading on the internet. It is my understanding the tuck stitch procedure will not work on a Neo. She told me if she removed the gland it would effect the tear production, generate Ulcers which would lead to the need of removing the eye. Well that's the way to scare me. She also put a stitch in the lower lids to minimize the droop. This cost me $1100.00.

Does this sound right to ya'll? Any information you personally have experienced would be great.

Much Thanks!

I don't have anything I can input as far as the procedure. But just wanted to ask how Max is doing? Glad the surgery went well

I don't have any personal experience either. I've heard that dogs that have the gland removed suffer from dry eye and require drops, but that's all I know about it. I might consider consulting with a canine ophthalmologist if that's doable for you. I'm glad to hear the surgery went well.

There is only one eye center here. It costs so much $$$ just for a consultation. I will take care of it for her as soon as I can, it does not bother her and I keep it clean and I have eye ointment to help decrease the swelling.

HHHMMM That is interesting. Max's was much bigger and only in 1 eye. I suspect the other 1 will pop out any moment. Did Zeela have it tucked and they popped back out? Will you consider the gland removal surgery in the future? If I thought it would not bother him I would leave them alone. Max's was big, blood red and swollen. Bothering him real bad. I sure hope I have done the right thing for him.

Max is doing good. The eye is real red and still swollen but the Vet. said this is to be expected. 3 -4 days I should see significant improvement. The hardest part is keeping him calmed down. The cone on his head is making him crazy. Tomorrow I am going in to town to get him an inner tube 1. See if he can manage a bit better. 2 weeks is going to be tough wearing that thing! Thank you for asking!!!

Actually, they were 2 huge pink balls in the corner of her eyes, so they were cut and tucked under, however as you can see it did not work well. The Vet had told me that it may not. If I get the glands removed then there is no tear production. I don't know what I am going to do...I need an experienced eye vet.

Thank you very much for you input. I think I am in a similar pickle as you. My reg. Vet. wanted me to see their ophthalmologist but I did not want a stranger operating on him so our 2nd Vet. is who did it. We have 9 dogs so we keep 2 Vet's so that hopefully 1 of them will be available when we need them which as you can imagine is alot. I think I screwed up here. I will give him time to heal and then go see the specialist if need be. I will keep you posted! Thanks again!

I don't think you screwed up, we are doing the best we can for them. It's a crap shoot. Good luck to you too & I will keep you posted as well.

He is doing ok. He has all the puppy energy going on but I'll tell you the eye looks pretty narly. He has a follow up appt. on Thursday. Hopefully they will tell me this is typical during recovery as I have no experience with this. I gave up on the cone. He is wearing an inner tube around his neck. He is bumpy on the things but not getting the jolt from that cone. Thank you for checking on him!

You’re welcome... I believe there’s many more then just me watching and hoping he comes out of this much better

Thanos had one cherry eye that was removed at 6 months, then the other eye had one at 8 months that was removed as well. He sometimes has dry eyes but I would say less than 5 times a year do I do drops. The surgery was fast and healing was quick with him. The vet who did Thanos only charges around $400 for both eyes. He said he prefers to just take them out instead of the stitch because it is a relatively high chance for it to happen again. Good luck

Thank you for your input, that is probably what I will do for Zeela.

Took Max to the Vet on Thursday. A stitch had come undone and causing an infection in the eye. They charged me another $511.00. It looks terrible. I have a dear friend in SE TX that is telling me to bring Max to her (33 yrs exp.) and they will remove the gland. She says this should have been done from the get go. I am now $1600.00 in to the Vet currently doing this. I don't know whether to just cut my losses or stay with the Vet in Austin. What do ya'll think? I am SO upset!!!

When Georgia had her spleen removed, she wore the cone, was shaved all over. You would have thought she was a working girl sitting in Church for the first time. She was so embarrassed about it all.

Sorry you and Max are going through this. As you are closest to the situation and I am no expert by any means, if it was only cosmetic, I would roll with it before I would make a dog suffer with dry eyes. As I stated I am not seeing everything you are and don’t know all the details.
