Alone with two dogs is way better than alone

This evening was a major mixed bag. My dogs and I enjoyed some wonderful time in the yard right after work and we all had such a good time. But then there was a creepy situation that made me so grateful for their loud stranger danger warnings...

So here is my night in photo form...

It began with fetch and fun.

Of course Diesel plays fetch and Kahlua
Plays ambush, chase and steal.

And Kahlua always wins. She is the embodiment of determination.

But Diesel doesn’t mind.

They both end up happy

And when its time to come in they are both always ready

But then the weirdness...

A young couple rang my bell. They had an incedibly scrawny neopolitan mastiff with them.

My loyal guardians were all barks and snarls. I closed the door behind me to talk

And this pair kept up their warnings and stance the entire time and for once I was grateful .

The couple tells me they found this dog and are looking for the owner and is it mine. I tell them no not mine both mine are inside. They ask if i can take it and i tell them that one of mine is not dog friendly accept to her brother so i really cant but they may want to ask the neighbor who also has two dogs but theirs may be friendly to other dogs.

They tell me the humane society said to just let the dog loose and that they cant keep it. So i ask where they live and they get very vague and weird. They leave shortly after without visiting any of my neighbors and i cant help but wonder if they werent casing my house and be very grateful my dogs are going crazy i the background. The best deterrants i could ask for.

I went straight to the neighbors after and told them everything. They agreed it was weird and also doubted the story. I spent the next two hours sipping wine and chatting with the neighbors.

Now i am cuddled in bed with the dogs but jumping at every sound.

Kahula and diesel look so happy, your going to be so happy living there.
I kniw exactly how you feel, i had a girl saying she was from rspca collecting donations, i knew straight away she was fake, i live in an isolated are, fuelds all around me so i could be vulnerable, now normally i tell my boys to stand down, this girl was asking stupid questions about my dogs, budcuss was at window, gandalf at gate, gollom on boundary, they really didnt like her, i normally tell them to stand down but this time i let them show there distaste for her, and when she asked if my dogs would attack if anyone come on the property i just said yes,
I talked to my neighbour which is roughly half a mile away, he had them at his door also, he found them strange, sadly a week later he was burgled. I wasnt and im sure my boys put them off,
When the police called here for my input i told them what i said about my dogs, he said a lot of these burglars ect send people to find out what dogs are like that are living on a property to see if its worth the risk to try and enter.
My advice to you is if you feel that anyone atbyour door is strange to tell them your dogs are aloof with anyone they dont know and wouldnt stand for anyone entering, dont give them anymore information however friendly they seem to be.
I think your very safe, they know your pack will make noise and have sharp teeth.

Good dogs! And smart you. While I've been vocal about not expecting my dogs to protect my property, I do expect them to be deterrents, and they are. I've actually sent Ella to the front porch window before to surprise anyone that felt off to them and to me. I'm often home alone and I like that they're on the watch when my husband is gone. When people ask if my dogs are friendly, I say no.

That could have gone a lot worse. Glad they were put off by the dogs... When is your hubby coming back? He would probably be a detterent as well....And letting your neighbors know was very smart. They can keep an eye out for you....

We get weirdos all the time with a slip of paper claiming they have to sell something for a college course credit. They look like junkies. We had a guy come one time in summer here in south lousiana wearing a leather jacket. It was hot as hell. And he looked like he just stepped out of it!

He had a spay bottle of water, and said he was selling the latest greatest cleaner. He didn't expect my 200 lb. Solid as a brick wall, Bruce Lee loving husband to step out for the "demo"! Lol he didn't stick around...

Well he went across the street to the widows house. So my husband followed him, and said," Judy, I'm here to hang that picture for you" Lol The guy was asking her if he could go in and get a drink of water. Needless to say, she was very happy to see my husband!....

Be careful, and if they come back. I would report it.

Honestly at first I was concerned about the dog. He was a big beautiful neo and he was so skinny with his ribs sticking out. And then I realized as they continued that things didn't seem right. I don't know if I properly conveyed our house was not a good target but I certainly hope I did. I am still worried about that poor neo though. And I am so glad that my dogs kept up the barking the whole time.

Im not sure I was smart so much as lucky that my dogs were so consistent. I was taken in by the poor starved mastiff to begin with. When I told them one of my dogs was aggressive so I couldn't just take him in I wasn't exaggerating. Kahlua has a really hard time meeting new anything and I had no idea what the temperament of the neo was so I wasn't about to take on that responsibility knowing Kahlua makes it a volatile situation already. I told them he wouldn't be safe in my house and I meant it. I just don't have the time and means at this moment to separate a strange dog. All our gates are still at the old house and the extra crate as well. I just hope that comment made them think aggression and connect that to a threat to strange people as well.

What makes me really nervous is I desperately need to go to the store today and I don't want to leave them and the house alone now that this incident occurred.

The couple that stopped by my place looked a bit like junkies also... I wish my husband was here again already. I am sure he would be a nice added deterrant. There are few times in life I hate being as short as I am but this is one of them. I am zero intimidating. That's probably why I surround myself with taller people and larger dogs. lol

So I live very rural too, as an advid gun collector I will usually have one in hand and very visible. I also will not call down the dogs either, let them do their job. I have seen a lot in the 24 years I have lived here, I hate coming off so brash, but this day in time, oh well. Btw I have a no trespassing sign that is four foot by six foot at the end of my driveway. I like rural, but with a thirty minute sheriff response time, I like brash too. I have a wife and three children that are not as brash, I make up the difference.

How i wish we could have guns but the uk laws are so different, iv got signs all around the boundary of our property also, and sensor security lights, iv had to learn to be brash my kids have all grown and left home, hubby works away and goes fishing overnight so it can be just me and the dogs, but its like now its midnight here my back doors open and the boys are in and out patrolling then laying at my feet, we also trained them not to eat anything unless we give it to them, a lot of dogs have been poisened so they can burgle propertys.

No ....ah.....guns there??? Bummer. In the old west, the saying was, "God made man and Sam Colt made them equal." That's not too far from the truth...and Glen, you are a "super doper moderator." TRG, glad to hear that you are an avid gun collector. Tomorrow I am in what they call a "lever action silhouette competition." I use an old 1953 Marlin tube fed .22 caliber for the .22 caliber stuff, and a Marlin Model 57 in .22 magnum for the pistol cartridge competition. We have fun. Have a great weekend. TRG---a burgled neighbor...that's too bad. Where are you located ?? Pic is Chev in our backyard with one of his outdoor "toys", a broken boomerang (a stick.)

Don't worry about the Neo Nik, chances are they use him to lull people into being off their guard so that they can case houses. Someone taking that dog in might find their home burgled and their own pets dead. Personally, if that happened here I'd call the police fraud squad and give them my impressions, maybe, just maybe I'd find out something fishy like this had happened before and they were looking for these guys.

Maybe you should invest in a system like Ring video and Audio... I didn't feel good about you putting yourself outside where the dogs couldn't protect you. Better to talk through the audio feature on a security system and tell them to haul ass(ets.)
