Obedience classes probably saved us a lot of grief

My beautiful Bella came to the office with me today. Thank goodness Bella and I have been in obedience classes at Perfect Scents K9 INC.

You see when Bella was just a little pup she was attacked by a big male dog. Before I knew it this big male dog had Bella only about 3 or 4 months old by the throat pinned down. Sunny my tea cup poodle mix, all of only 6lbs jumped in between this male. To my horror he grabbed her.... I had to tackle the dog to get him to release her.

Well today Bella and I spotted this (not so big now that Bella’s 126lbs) male dog about a block ahead of us... Bella started to pull on her lead. I said Bella look..... then gave her the hand single to sit..... and it worked!!! She looked at me then sat... I then gave the command “walk with me.... turned her around and she did it!!! Thank you to the trainer

I know if she hadn’t been to the classes I wouldn’t have been able to hold her.

Yes, obedience classes are a good thing.
Glad yours were successful.

Sorry about the dog attack, I hope your little dog recovered well, too?

Thanks for sharing the story. Yes training is so so important! Good job with Bella! Was your poodle okay post attack? Did you have a lot of anxiety or dog aggression to work through with Bella after the attack?

Sunny the 6lb poodle still has the 4 puncture scars. Bella has aggression towards other dogs and sometimes people too..... This is one of the reason we went to obedience classes. I'm signing her up for the obedience class grade 2. Then if she's still has undo aggression towards dogs I'll sign her up for scent classes as well.

You might want to consider agility classes as well. Our Kahlua has some aggression towards other (female) dogs and agility work seems to help give her confidence and really redirect that energy. I have been dying to do actual scent work classes I just haven't found one that works with our schedules yet.

Thanks for the agility class idea..... I would have never thought about putting an EM in one.... Just really didn't see it. But that would be a great way to help her burn up energy and regain her confidence.
As per scent classes. I've trained Bella to track the grandkids by scent.... They all love it. If you have a bit of yard you can scent train fairly easy. The only reason I'll be putting my girl in scent classes is my niece helps the trainer and the dog kennel/training is my neighbour. And of course the socializing.

My dog Diesel has natural scenting inclinations. He can find anything. It is pretty amazing. Both dogs love agility. But, for Kahlua it is has been an essential confidence builder and she needs that because she is very wary of new scenarios, situations, sounds, etc. The confidence building is huge. And you don't even really need to do anything too strenuous to get that confidence just as little as going to an empty kids playground and walking her up the stairs of the play structures and across the bridges is huge in giving her that confidence boost.

Thanks Nik, I wouldn't have thought about taking her to kids play equipment
