I recently had a rather frustrating experience with my mother. Particularly with my mom not listening to my advice and experience.
My mom has a two year old tiny dog she got at the same time we got Diesel.
A couple of weeks ago my mom's dog was chasing a cat in their back yard and suddenly collapsed and couldn't walk. It turned out to be a disk issue in his back. The poor little guy couldn't stand up and definitely couldn't walk.
We had experienced something similar (minus the cat chasing incident) with our now passed senior dog, Cerberus. He had a back disk issue that made it so he couldn't lift his head and his back legs weren't working. Much like my mom did we rushed to the vet. And much like my mom's diagnosis we were told we were looking at a surgery in the price line of $10,000 - $20,ooo range. Unlike my mom, our dog was extremely old and our vet told us his chances of surviving such a surgery weren't great with a recommendation to put to sleep instead.
We chose not to give up and looked into alternatives. My boss has recently been through a similar thing with his tiny little senior dog and he had found a chiropractor who he swore worked wonders with his dog. So we gave it a shot. It was a better alternative to risky surgery or to putting our dog to sleep. And the chiropractor worked! We did three visits at just $75 a pop and he was running around like a goofy puppy afterwards. Our senior dog was happy and mobile again. And the fix lasted the remaining years of his life with no more incidents. So I recounted this entire experience to my mom after her prognosis from the vet and she ignored me.
Instead she opted for the pricey surgery. And now several weeks later her dog can stand and sort of walk. But one of his legs is completely non-functional. He also has lost bladder control. He can't always tell when he is peeing or when he needs to pee. It was not a complete fix.
The vet told her his result was a best case scenario and they could try more surgeries but with no guarantee. I had to bite my tongue and not tell her "I told you so". Instead I told her that once her pup has recovered fully from surgery I would be happy to refer her to my chiropractor once more and he might be able to help.
But, why... Why would she not have listened to me? I had gone through the exact same thing. My boss had gone through the exact same thing.
I know chiropractic therapy isn't traditional but this guy, this particular guy has a huge repertoire of dogs he has helped. Many dogs that couldn't walk and after having visited him a few times could. I wouldn't necessarily trust a different chiropractor without many references. But, this guy. This guy saved our dog and gave him extra years. She knew our dog and knew how bad he was and how recovered he was after. You would think that she would at least have had one appointment.
