I have just brought a little girl into out family. Sam will be 8 weeks tomorrow and only weighs 5 pounds. Brought her to the vet a few days ago and her health checked out just fine and she was 4.2 lbs. Has anyone had one this little and if so did they catch up to an average size.

That is quite small. Do you have a pic of her standing and a side and back view?

Did the vet check for worms?

Mastiffs continue to grow until 2-3 yrs old when they usually have a growth spurt. Generally, the pup will be about the size of the mom and pop's weight averaged out.

BTW, welcome aboard~ Is this your first mastiff pup?

welcome to the board I would love to see pics. That is awfully small for a mastiff. My girl was 20 lbs at 8 weeks

This is our first Mastiff. We did have her tested for worms and everything checked out ok. They were feeding her Pedigree puppy and I know I need to get her on a better food. I will post a picture if I can figure out how to on this site LOL

Here are some pictures. She is very skinny. I have been able to put a pound on her in the few days we have had her.

I am doubtful any vet would juat do a fecal and not deworm at 8 weeks..Even a clear fecal doeant rule out worms.

I have been giving her 3/4 cup at a time and she will not finish it. It seems like she poops more than she eats. any recomendation on a good food that is reasonably priced? I dont have access to the big pet store where I live.

I have an appointment on Monday with the vet for her shots and I am going to request some meds for worms just incase.

Where are you? In the US? Privately owned stores often have a better selection of pet foods, or do you only have grocery stores? Would you be willing to order food online?

I am in the Florida Keys. There is a pet shop, Publix grocery store and Kmart. Petco is about a 35 mile ride which is not a problem once I find the food that she does well on.

If your petshop carries Earthborn, Acana or Orjen, one of those would probly be ideal IMO, though theres several others that're good too, if you can get a list of what they carry. Petco's selection is better than Petsmart's IMO. I'm on my ipad so ling posts suck, but someone else'll post a list of decent studf if I don,t get to it first.

GO VERY SLOW transitioning her to her new food. She's so tiny it'd not take much to dehydrate her! 5lbs at 8 weeks is smaller than my Arty at the same age and HIS adult weight is only 33lbs! Are they sure she's 8 weeks old?

Thanks I'll check out the pet store on Monday. I was wondering if she was 8 weeks and the vet said she is right aroud there. This is a new vet for me as I have just moved here a few months ago. There were 12 pups in the litter and when I picked her up there were 7 left and they all looked about the same condition. I dont think they were fed properly, just my opinion. She is a sweet heart and can't wait to get her healthy and on track.

There is something seriously wrong if she is a purebred mastiff and she is 8 weeks that's a red flag. Check her kidneys I knew a female shepherd who had one defective kid ey she was 40 pounds as an adult and looked like a puppy either she is not a pure mastiff or is younger than 8weeks. Who did you get her from?

Did you see the parents? Based on the pictures I cannot tell which type of Mastiff she is if she is even a Mastiff. Is there a chance she could be a mix of breeds? That is abnormally small by a lot.

The pics are teeny, so it is hard to get a good look at your wee baby. Tali was a bony baby, and is still quite svelt and small for her breed, but has really thrived on the Dick Van Patten Bison and Sweet Potato blend, as she seems sensitive to chicken.
