Throwing up...help, please

His gums are moist and pink.

Franklin has been sleeping most of the day, and he has an appt. with a vet right down the street tomorrow at 9:45. Oddly enough this is the same vet we used to go to with my other dogs 12 years ago when we lived here.They were going to try to work me in this evening but they weren't sure if they could and I didn't want him to have to sit and wait for what might have been a couple of hours since he's not great with other dogs or people for that matter. The receptionist told me they would get him straight back to a room tomorrow morning.

I'm giving him a tiny bit of water or an ice cube about every hour and he hasn't vomited since 9 this morning. The vet wants me to bring in a sample of his vomit and stool if I can get one.

Denna had a vomit-episode last week... 7 piles in 2 hours... but other than being a little tired the next day, it didn't go any further.
If it was something he ate, I would have expected it to be through the system by now.

Hope the vet finds the problem and can get it taken care of quick & easy!

Glad to hear Franklin ate a little and is sleeping. Our dog, Teddy, (not a mastiff) got pancreatitis as well, and nothing in his diet had changed at all--just happened. We noticed the problem when he couldn't keep anything down, including water. Vet gave him an antibiotic and fluids.

I do have a couple of questions...and I'll ask them here since some of you have experience and if I write them, I'll remember to ask the vet in the morning.
1. If it's pancreatitis, wouldn't it be painful? He hasn't shown any signs of pain since this whole thing started.
2. Fila, you said Flower had it. Was she acting fine one minute, then throwing up a couple of hour later? Last night after Franklin had his fish broth, he was absolutely fine. Growling, attacking Zoomie, (playfully) and rolling on his back to play like he was never sick. Three hours later I'm up with him because he is vomiting again.
3. How are you supposed to treat a sick dog? That question sounds dumb, but I thought I read on here that you're not supposed to treat them differently when they're sick. Franklin will find me when he has to throw up. If I'm in bed, he uses his nose to take the covers of me so I'll get up. Then I stand with him and rub his back until he's done. Is that taking the whole "taking care of him" thing too far? lol

I love that!! We've done that with our kids, and if my dog was telling me that she was going to throw up, I would comfort her as well.

Flower only threw up once and the rest of the time she tried to throw up probably 10x.the night before she was her normal crazy self.so. I thought she just had an upset stomach and treated her as such.during the 1st day she was acting kind of like normal,just a bit off.sleeping a little more and nothing else,besides attempting to vomit. she refused food and drank very little.I made broth,no deal.made boiled chicken and rice,the same-no deal. around midnight of the first day,she ate 3 tablespoons plain yogurt and then nothing else.I had decided to fast her for 24hrs in the hopes to relieve her "stomachache".the next day she was the same and continually got worse that evening,so we went to the vet.

I was also in the lack of funds situation and so thankful for the help of a wonderful friend. Flowers final tally is $3489.63!!!!so, I guess I will be selling my 1st born and getting the dogs to work odd jobs in the attempt to start repaying her!!!I have been waiting 14 mos for my disability to be accepted(long story, will not sidetrack).

Flower really wasn't showing any pain until the night I took her in. the vets also told me that some cases of acute pancreatitis show no pain or discomfort. which I just put off to "damn Filas",they always have some off the wall things happen to them.

of course in her case, the vets feel that the pancreatitis saved her life! her potassium levels were very(scary, per vet)low, as was her bp. this was all from the pancreatitis.

I am glad he has an appt. in the morning, I look forward to hearing that he is fine!!!good luck and my continued prayers for you both

Well, last night I gave Franklin 1/4 cup rice cooked in fish broth. He scarfed it down and didn't throw it up! I even gave him a little more water than I have been and he kept it down.

This morning there was no vomit and he didn't poop, so I'm hoping this is the end of his diarrhea as well.

Now I'm afraid the vet will think I'm crazy.

A dog can get through many illnesses like pancreatitis without medical aid if kept hydrated and no secondary infections or failures kick in. When Dozer went through this all they could do was give stuff to keep him from puking and IV fluids nothing elsed was given to him. But some dogs that may be already compromised don't make it through the first night.

Ugh!

I had everything typed up yesterday after we came back from the vet and I lost my internet connection and couldn't get back on all day. It's still spotty so I'll make it quick.

Franklin is much better today. He has an infection in his stomach. The dr said he probably got into something he wasn't supposed to but since he's with me all day, I really have no idea what that might have been. I liked this dr at the beginning but by then end he seemed bored and was trying to rush me to get out. Franklin's attitude might have had something to do with it. The dr had to examine him while I was out of the room.

F is on antibiotics and he got a shot to help with his vomiting. He threw up twice after we got home, but hasn't since then. He still has diarrhea but the dr said that would subside in a day or two. I am to give him one to two tablespoons of rice and boiled chicken twice a day today, then if things are looking better, I can increase it tomorrow. He said I was doing a good job keeping him hydrated and to continue with lots of water and Gatorade or Pedialyte as necessary for the next 24 to 48 hours.
F has a lot more energy today. He was excited when I woke up for the first time in almost a week. Now we just need to get rid of the diarrhea and he'll be doing great.

Hopefully i can post this now. If not, i'll be pissed. lol
