A Mastiff thing?? Playing in the water bowl...

Zoe has a new fun game...lol. She will start drinking and then start splashing around in her water bowl. As you all know Huge Paws, Kitchen Floor and Water Bowl are not a good mix. Then her secondary game of chase the towel gets played. :p

Should I basically stand next to her when she drinks and use the "Leave it" comand and remove her paw each time? Or will she think I mean leave the water all together? I've tried only giving a little bit, filling it up, adding ice cubes, not leaving her bowl down, etc. I'm out of ideas. We use Neater Feeder food dishes, could she not like that? We also have a kiddie pool for her that she has used a few times and likes.

Ha, Charlotte does that a little bit too! And it's adorable. She puts both paws in and looks up like "hm, how did they get in there?" And then starts splashing around and pawing as if there is something in the water that she wants. However....this does lead to a messy kitchen.

She hasn't done it a ton yet, so I don't have any words of advice, just wanted to let you know that Zoe's in good company.

What about a smaller bowl?

It's definitely not just a mastiff thing. My mastiff doesn't do it but my German shepherd does and she's almost 3. She doesn't splash in it as much any more but she has to stick her paw in it which gets water everywhere.

We just got her new bowls that were bigger thinking that was the problem, but instead it seems more fun! She does it 2-3 times a day!

Yeah, it is pretty cute when she does it! She's just having so much fun!

My dogs don't, unless you count the kiddie pool and then Kryten needs to stand in it when he drinks (Jiggers lies down) but one cat has to 'check if it is still wet'. The largest bowl she will stand on the rim, dip her paw in and then lick it off.

my dog doesn't play in it, but he does hang half his mouth over the side of the water dish when he drinks so the slobber dribbles out of the water dish onto the floor, I ended up getting a shoe mat for under the water dish so my floor doesn't end up a swimming pool every time he drinks.

Titan does this too. I've tried to place the bowl at different spots but he stills does it. :( I use a water mat and it's full of slimey, slobbery water by midday. YUK! Titan hasn't played in his water, thank goodness!

Claymore does this rarely but his main crime is being a jerk if his water is too low. He takes his paw and slaps the side of his dish as hard as he can. Flips the damned thing over with what every water is left in it. Then he kicks it around the house, clanging it and getting water everywhere. He is quite insistent.

I'm sorry, I know it's not funny at the time but man they way you tell the story is hilarious.

Arty does this with his food bowl. I'm not sure WHY, since they're raw fed we don't use the bowls much, but when he's hungry he starts whacking the bowl around.....

Percy will take his empty bowl into the living room, stick his head into it and push it around. When he runs into the furniture he just looks at it, turns around and does it again.

Fhalyn does this too - but thank God it's only when she's at the dog park! She also has a kiddie pool in the back yard, which I think helps because that's more fun than the "small" water bowl!

Good luck with this!

The water bowl is Boone's favorite toy! I remember posting a thread about this myself, a couple of months ago.. he splashes the water out of his bowl, spreads it around on the floor and lies down in it :)

I had a newfy that thought having at least one paw in the water dish was mandatory in order to drink water. Then if the dish wasn't full enough he would scoot it around on the floor with his one paw still in the dish. We tried using a floor mat to help keep the floor somewhat dry, but found it wasn't big enough and had to use beach towels. What we do for our babies.

My lab/golden mix loved tennis balls, as any self respecting retriever does. He would bring it & bring it & bring it until he got really tired; walk over to the water bowl, drop the ball INTO the water bowl, get a big old slobbery drink, pick up the tennis ball, & bring it again.:slapme:

Mine don't play in the water bowl, but we used to have a waterer out side that when they stepped on it it shot water up- doggie fountain. It was really cool. Dogs always had fresh water. But Abner liked to sit or lay on it when it was hot, and it would run for hours, keeping him cool. We ended up with a big mud puddle and the other dogs were thirsty! Lol.
