Switched foods.... Right choice ?

Hey everyone

About a week ago, My gf and I decided to change the food we were feeding Jenny. She is 5 months old. We were feeding her "perfomatrin Large breed puppy" .... I was finding that she was having runny poops(some of the time) and wasnt growing all that much. So.... just as a test to see how she would do, I bought a bag of "TOTW Pacific Streem" ... so moving to an "all stages" as opposed to "puppy"

I have been mixing the food roughly 50/50 for the last week to wein her onto it. She eats her meals LIKE CRAZY now... and her poops are solid and have been pretty well consistant. I dont know if its just my eyes playin tricks, but it does look like shes packed on a few pounds aswell.

I think I have made the right choice, she seems to be agreeing with the Taste of the Wild.

How much do you think we should be feeding ? At the moment, she gets approx 2 cups, twice a day.

Do you think we have made the right move ?

I really liked TOTW, unfortunately here it is 75$ a bag, and with 3 large dogs too much $$ when they go through roughly a bag a week, I can do raw cheaper.
I followed the amounts (roughly) on the bag, but altered depending on how my dog looks. I am guessing that 4 cups sounds about right, but just monitor how she is looking and adjust with her weight gain :)
Good luck!

I started feeding TOTW about 2 months or so ago, along with raw....and some junk food from time to time. We switched from Pro Plan. I can tell a noticeable difference. He is looking better and it keeps the weight on him. I get it at a feed store for $40 for a 30lb bag. Sorry Cody.

LOL!
I know, the prices we pay here are absurd!
I recently wrote Acana, it is made about an hour from my house with local products, and we pay 64$ a 30lbs bag. Meanwhile a friend in New York buys it for 34$ a bag, that drives me absolutely insane. I want to support local companies, but seriously...
I will drive up there and just buy bulk for that price lol.

Not to deviate from the topic, but doesn't that company make many different foods, such as Diamond, Chicken SFD, etc. ?

Diamond makes TOTW, Chicken Soup, etc yes. I can't swing the TOTW however, so we do Chicken Soup which both of mine to wonderful on. Each dog is different. I tried Canidea on my catahoula a while back and all of her hair started falling out in clumps. Others say it's the best food they've ever fed their dogs. So you never know until you try! :)

how does Diamond compare to the TOTW if they are made by the same company
I was told by the lady that I get if from that TOTW is the high end diamond....for what that's worth. I would think that Diamond is a good food. If TOTW has a jump in price for some reason here, I would feel ok switching to something like Diamond vs the typical Petsmart choices. Not to be snobby about your run-of-the-mill foods, but considering how cheap I could get Diamond with its good quality, I wouldn't benefit from paying a premium for the grain filled foods.

Diamond makes all these different brands, and each brand has different ingredients and/or different amounts of each ingredient, and are different "grades" and price brackets. To me, there wasn't really a big different between TOTW and Chicken Soup from what I could tell (although I'm certainly no expert), so I just went with Chicken Soup. And both my dogs do great on it. Although another dog may to poorly on it.

We have Grady on TOTW Bison as well and he loves it and is gaining perfectly and his stools have been solid ever since... luckily we have a feed store that has it for $45 per 30lb bag. Sounds like that's not too bad!

TOTW is insane here too! We have one feed store you can get it at on a regular basis and they charge uber mark ups. I have to drive to CO if we want the price under $65-75. So like Cody, we switched to raw.

The only issue is now I have a DIVA. Nike used to eat chicken. The butcher is now processing bison, elk, angus beef, deer, and pronghorn. I ran out of the "butcher blend" and she had to eat chicken and pork. She picked the chicken out and dropped it on her table and gave me the "Really Mom" look. She was very excited when she saw the boxes with the butcher bags. He even added a few extra bison ribs for them, because Nike would not eat chicken anymore. :D

Taste of the Wild is currently an all life stages food. Sierra Mountain is best for a large or giant breed puppy though, according to a dog nutritionist I know in another forum.

Im not planning on switching just yet but i plan on getting an EM here within the next year and i was thinking about switching food then and i was just looking for a slightly cheaper food with a good quality because i dont believe in owning a quality dog and feeding bottom line food, i find it to be unfair

I know that TOTW is an all stages food but I would certainly make sure whether it is the best food for a growing puppy. I know that it has a very high protein content comparably, as well as fat too.

What TOTW formula for a 6 month old?
I think they are all pretty much the same formula, but with different meats added for each flavor. I have even been switching it up from time to time between the bison and the wetlands and occasionally the pacific stream. The pacific stream does have a little less protien and fat. But like I said, these are high protein, high fat foods. I would ask around about whether it is the best option for a growing puppy. Maybe it is. Be careful about asking a vet. Many seem pretty ignorant on the subject and can be influenced by their endorsements, such as Science Diet.

It's not the protein levels but the calcium levels that make it not the best choice for a growing giant puppy. The dog nutritionist I talked to about feeding it to my english mastiff puppy since I already feed it to my other two said Sierra Mountain was the only one with a low enough calcium level to make it okay for giant pups. There are certainly plenty of other choices but Taste of the Wild is a good, middle of the road price wise food. I agree though that asking a vet is definitely not always your best bet. Most vets received minimal education about nutrition, which is understandable considering all they have to learn.
