Possible Future Tosa Owner Here!

Well Matt mentioned getting a Tosa AGAIN last night infront of his PARENTS. His mother looked at both of us and said "Another Animal?!" lol. We had to calm her down and explain not until we are down one dog (crossing fingers that won't happen soon) and when we are ready. She just shook her head and mentioned she wanted grand babies that didn't have a full coat of hair. I made a smart a$$ reply and reminded her that I am still waiting on my Sphynx kitten and that they have no hair so she would get her wish soon. LOL.

I am still amazed he is bringing this up time and time again. As well as doing his research. That is usually my job and then having to share my infinate wisdom with him.

Anyone done alot of reseach into the Breeders or know any personally?

haha! My mother has decided that grand babies with full coats of hair are better than none at all lol.

Can't help with breeders, good luck though!

Hmmmm...how do I say this....I sure as hell hope that the good folks here do not find this an acceptable form of sport regardless of the breed or the country in which it takes place.

I am in Canada. I do not support Dog fights. I understand the Tosa was and still is being bred for Dog fighting in Japan as was their original purpose. If I ever were to get one (Which I am not saying FOR SURE or have given an OKAY lets get one) it would be after a LOT of research, meeting with owners/dogs and breeders alike and once everyone in my house hold say yes. Matching the right energy and temperment to my household as well as ensuring the charactoristics of the breed itself matches my house hold. I do not go into these thigns lightly.

I would not get a Tosa for its original purpose and I am not the only one who does this. A lot of people have Hunting Breeds ( Dachshunds, Rat terriers, Dalmations, Shiba-inu and Pit Bulls) of which few people actually use for hunting and have a prey-drive that rarely allows them to be off leash outside (not saying all the dogs in this breed group are alike as each dog is an individual).

I also treat my Animals like Gold and would rather spend my extra money on buying stuff for them than myself (this is evident in the amount of dog tooys, collars, leashes, treats I make, food and my actual house which has floating shelves, cat posts and toys stuck to the walls and am fencing my whole yard this summer. As well as the pretty large savings account I have for Vet emergency's)

I am also not trying to TOOT my own horn. I just want to re-assure you that I understand what it takes to own an animal with a certain "Calibre".

Sorry if I offended anyone.

Ahhh did I say you have the wrong intension for your Tosa? Nope. All I said was i sure hope the good folks here dont find this an acceptable form of sport. I hated that video because I think I know why that dog was being paraded in its ceremonial costume, a costume as lovely as it is was made for a dog that was made for fighting, therefore in my eyes its an ugly costume regardless of its beauty. If that makes any sense at all??

hey no worries....i know folks here arent in to that, at least i sure as hell hope not, but even just seeing that beautiful animal all trussed up in a costume made for him because he is bred to fight makes my stomach turn. i just cant bare to look at him and know (as much as I can know) where his future lay. Anyway..Im rambling. Its all good with us kb.

Good. I never want to be on anyones "Hit List" here on the forum. Everyome seems resonable here unlike some forums I have been on.

I don't care for it but I respect them for what the do. My interest breed the BK is a "fighting" dog, in PK tournaments are held and dogs are evaluated. I know if and when I do get one it will be from "fighting lines" Does it mean I condone it, no, but I need to understand and respect the heritage it came from.

which was why I didn't ask lol. I don't think anyone here approves of dog fighting, and the one time I've seen someone wander through who seemed to approve and participate he got massively jumped on. But I do also understand that in other countries its what the dogs are bred for and if I want to see what those dogs look like and how they're handled in their native countries I may have to view the trappings of dog fighting. As long as I don't have to actually watch the actual fighting I'll keep my mouth shut about what is accepted practice over there (unless someone asks and then they get an earfull.....).

Call me ignorant but was that dog being presented in readiness to fight?

That is a show put on for tourists in Tosa, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. That dog in the show may or may not be a fighter, but that ceremonial show is not the precursor for a dog fight. It is done for tourists who visit the area and want to see the famous "Tosa Fighting Dog" without having to see an actual dog fight. Dog fighting is actually illegal in most of Japan.
