So I met my first Fila... in PetSmart :(

Yup, the owners were just signing up for puppy training class... I am so upset about the whole situation. The owners wanted a mastiff and saw the ad on kijiji for Brazilian Mastiff's advertising them as "your very own gentle giants". They are first time dog owners, had no idea what a Fila was, they own a Brazilian Mastiff. She is 4 months old, was shying away and trying to avoid people, the owners were forcing her to accept the petting. I tried to talk to them about temperament and they had no idea what I was talking about. They kept telling me that they had signed her up for puppy class and as long as they socialized her she would be great with people :( I am so sad for her and her future...

Oh wow! That sounds like its not going to end well. I hope after talking to you they do some reading about the breed...

Thats a damn shame. Only hope there is the dogs soft yet stable
Not thinking she will be that soft. I spoke with the trainer, gave her some info on the breed, did a layman's explanation of Ojeriza and gave her some links... She is going to print some things off for the owners, but she told me in class some one made a quick movement too close to the owner (who let me add is a VERY young girl, my guess is around 18) and the pup tried to nail them. Came close as well. The owners do not seem to want to learn. They are upset she is growling at people and are in petsmart class to get her to stop :( As for her confidence she seemed very cool, not startled by things, just did not want to be touched by strangers. Not fearful of them, just disgusted lol

That sounds like a hard one to me. Their best bets to either except it for what it is and work around the dog as is needed, or give the pup up. Thats not gonna end well any other direction they take

Wow, this just makes me sick. Just a time bomb waiting to happen. This is so unfair for the pup.

Thank you Cody for trying to educate them on the personality of their puppy. Hopefully, at some point it will sink in.

well good that they at least heard something from you to hopefully lead them into the right direction despite the a-hole breeder....

Wow, just sad. Not only is the owner irresponsible, whoever sold them using language like that is a scumbag.

Unfortunately, people will say and breed anything for money. I should say a majority of people. There are good responsible breeders out there.

Especially if its "rare" and different.

What I don't get is why people try to pass them off as "Gentle Giants". I would think that "Bad Ass" dog would get you as much money or more.

It maybe that Fila's are cheap. I only paid 1,200 for Cane, from a kennel, not a byb. That seemed to be the median price range. From my understanding an EM runs about 500 more and on up.

Wow really? GM's are an arm and leg, I could sell eggs and still be in debt.

Probably because those "bad a$$" people don't think Fila look like a "bad a$$" dog. Honestly I find it to be a perk, lol. Break into my home my hound mix won't hurt you......

I was looking this weekend online and I found filas anywhere from 600-1700. And none of those I'm assuming byb said anything about the breeds temperament. Just talked about what a great family dog they are. Scary thought of how many people don't know what they are buying.

Great....another breed that will be banned due to owner AND breeder stupiditiy. Poor girl.

They are banned in quite a few countries already. My town is a tourist town and a couple years ago there were a group of men and women visiting from some where in europe and couldnt beleive they came across a fila and asked if they could get pictures with her because they were banned in their country. I was in the bank when this was transpiring, my boyfriend was waiting in the truck for me with the dog, he was still a newbie to the breed, he knows better now after a few close calls he has had and alot of I TOLD YOU SO !!! men never listen lol

And my female was just a year and socialized from day one so was not a lunging biting maniac, she behaves in public.
