Possible Future Tosa Owner Here!

So as a few of you know I had a post up questioning the possible Mastiff Breed in my Rott/Mastiff. Many different breeds were thrown out some including DDB, Lab or a cross of mastiff and lab. There was one breed that was said that stuck in my mind and I have been researching everything about the breed since. This was non other than the Tosa Inu!

I showed a picture of the Tosa to my boyfriend and his jaw dropped as it looks incredibly similair to our Barron. Since then he has also been doing research into the breed.

Fast forward to last night while walking our 2 boys. "How long do you think Duke has with us?" Me being a little suprised as he is only 8 years old(guesstemate from vet). said "oh I am sure we have another at least 5 years if nothing unfortunate happens...why?". Now Matt being very into Labs (Duke is a Lab and his first real dog) just shrugs a little and says " I would like our next dog to be a Tosa."

My eyes nearly bugged out of my head and my jaw fell open. This was uttered by a guy that always said we would get another Lab, That Barron is as big of a Dog as he would ever think of getting and a guy that would never "Pay" a substantial amount to get a dog.

I being sensable said all these things back to him and all he could simply say was "opinions and events change a person. If it is something that we want and know we can handle than we will save and I will have no reservations on doing it with the proper research and Breeder".

Now like I said we are FAR from getting a Tosa(we are a 2 dogs maximum house) but just that there is a possiblilty of owning one has me so excited!

You are getting yours from a Kennel in Japan right?

I have looked at the Tosa House website lol. He dogs are Beautiful but as of right now I have been seeing a lot of great looking Tosa's in Romania and one in Las Vegas. I will be looking through and contacting each Breeder and learning as much as I can about their Tosa's as well as looking for Reviews from people that have Purchased from them.

Yes, I will be importing mine. Actually my friend in Japan is picking her up this week... Then I gotta figure out how to get here to the states.

I'm guessing you are referring to Bushido Tosa Inu and Shogun Imperial Tosa?

I chat with Shogun's owner a lot. I don't know Bushido Tosa Inu very well, but their dogs are nice looking. Actually, if you look at their homepage, in the breed make up picture/chart, the Shikoku Ken (middle top - wolf looking dog) is a picture of my Shikoku Ken "Ahi". ;)

Anyway, my only caution would be to consider the level of dog aggression you are willing to tolerate, and select a kennel based on that. Shogun Imperial Tosa will produce a pretty "game" Tosa, that may or may not be something you want...

This kind of reminds me of a service dog getting ready in his vest. Tail is wagging but as soon as that vest goes on it is business!

Not so sure that he was "easy to redirect", I'm thinking more that he knows that the handler's tug on the collar means "no such luck sorry". Handsome dog though!

They figure that sorta thing out really quick as long as you're consistant. Apollo knows what his show collar and lead means, but god forbid I try to get him to stack in his prong......
