Basic rundown of GD/GM types. Each part of the world has a different style and lines of GD/GM's

French, Russia, Italian, Poland lines are usually more "mastiffy" or "houndish" of the lines. They tend to have a more wrinkled expression with a more robust, "shorter" build. See examples below. Common faults usually is that they tend tend to have eye problems ( exposed haw), poor rear ( no angle), cow hocked, and have roachy backs.

American Type, most commonly seen. Parent club is the Great Dane club of America. "American" breed danes are taller and more refined than their European counterparts. The only European type that are nearly identical to the American bred dane is the Scandinavian and Finland types.

LOL, no dane master here, just love the breed, faults and all. :) There are quite few more lines out there but these are the more commonly seen. "Euro" Danes are a hot selling item. :( So they are starting to show up more although I have yet to see any in my neck of the woods.

My first dane Duke was like your girl, but he was hard to keep weight on even at maturity.

Of the ones in the first 2 posts I would take the Italian too but I over all prefer the french Harliquin that was in a dane thread before. I have to say that the American line danes don't appeal to me at all.

I dont care for the Americans either, So how exactly do they get all these kinds? Do they just get mixed with other breeds or how does it work? Seems to be pretty drastic diff between some of them

Don't let them see you say that, lol. I don't care for them either but there are some American line harls that I like. Blues are starting to pick up as well because they are adding the European line to their program.

Chuck I'm still trying to figure that out. When I look back into the pedigree of some of these dogs their grandparents are the same as the US lines???? Some out crossing was added, IMO.

Same here. The Harls are kind of a Harl line to find a decent dog IMO. Some of them are either to hefty or too poorly built. On top of that I don't like the fact that most are breeding harl to harl:mad:

Very few harl breeders produce what I like.

Wow! Didn't know there were so many types!! Beautiful animals. I have always found Great Danes gorgeous =). Can I ask a question? What would Dane people say a Danes temperament should be like?

I work for a trainer, we have had a quite a few Danes since I've been working for my mom. One of my first almost bites was a huge Harlequin male. Scary! Gorgeous dog though, we have two in our class right now, a 5 month old female, and a 16 month old male. Beautiful and very sweet
